T'would be a double gamble for anyone who was tempted to try it. First, for not having a VOSA-legal numberplate format, and second, for having the cheek to try and avoid the road charges while still sporting a tell-tale exhaust pipe.

Every numberplate cam in the country could tell in an instant that it wasn't supposed to be green, and it would be all downhill from there, all the way to the magistrates' court.

But maybe it would be simpler just to fit the green numberplate cars with DVLA-issued transponders?

They already have a "useful visual identifier", it is called ANPR - it works seemingly well enough for TFL to nail every bugger within the M25 ......
