I looked at this ofr our upcoming weekly return from Exeter to Shrewsbury.
Journey time is similar on the train to driving, at around 3.5 hours.
I can do the 400 mile round trip in the car on a tank of ful so £65, the tickets for the train are about £80 per person , the splitter saving £20 or so, and then you need to get to/from the station.
As a comparitor the 100 mile return from Plymouth to Exeter at the same times is about a tenner. It seems longer trips cost more per mile than shorter ones.
Not exactly an incentive to help reduce car use.
