What a gorgeous car - if only I'd sold those damn Hurricane shares when they were worth summat!

Great looking car but awful to drive even at the time.

Surely it's not a car for driving. It's for posing in. And I wish I had one, it's the best-looking car ever, by a mile.

I've never been a 'car' person but that is drop dead gorgeous. Surely a design classic that will never be bettered.

I was lucky enough never to have to!
Back in the late 70s I was fortunate to have an example of the car known in its time as "the E Type beater" - a Lotus Elan. So called because they were supposedly faster 0-60 than an E Type. I dunno if E Type drivers agreed with this, but the Lotus was an utter delight to drive.
But at £42k so far that E Type looks a total bargain to me for such a well looked after and unspoiled example. It appears not to have reached the reserve price yet though...

I guess I'm some kind of philistine then. I'd much rather spend half of that on a modern car with better performance and all the creature comforts.
Scott.

This is a curious thing. Some people say much the same about the fine old vintage diesel engines you get sometimes in canal narrowboats. They simply cannot appreciate them. Others drool over them and go green with envy. And it's not a male/female thing either. Plenty of wimmins go all gooey at the sight and sound of a 1935 twin cylinder Kelvin diesel ticking over at 160rpm.
I guess the explanation is, some people just have no soul....

Well known for great handling and performance but also the speed with which they fell to bits, unfortunately.

Likewise, I'm a not a car person but do love that.
Possible challengers;
Lamborghini Miura (but I don't like the 'eyelashes' on some models
Citroen DS (1960s spy film car - greenhouse on wheels, oddly attractive...)
Aston Martin DB5/6

Interesting auction site, seems a last minute bid extends the auction by 2 minutes to give others a chance to bid again. But it's gone now, for £66,000.
But fear not, if you missed your chance there's a Roadster coming soon...

Personally while I love the looks (the Coupé has always been my favourite body on an E-Type) I prefer to own something I'd be comfortable to use daily. I have (and use) one of these: https://www.silverstoneauctions.com/eve ... er-de-luxe

'Interesting' site indeed.
I watched the last 10 minutes of the auction out of morbid fascination and noted that reserve had apparently been removed.
The auction then ended with the winning bid being £62,000 and at that point I switched off.
Your post then says the auction was reopened to allow further bids which ended with a £66,000 winning bid.
And now when you click on the link, it says the car is 'Unsold'.
If I was a potential customer, i'd stick two fingers up to that auction site I think.

You're missing the point. The person who buys this will already own a sensible, modern car (or two).
Classics are owned by people with enthusiasm and passion * who want something different out of life. For some it's steam engines, for others (like me) it's motorbikes.
* excluding those that buy them as an investment and put them in storage. Now, they are philistines

Indeed. I've been wanting to acquire a 1960s DS Decapotable for years, but preferably not for silly money. Ideally for Lady M's 50th, still got time!
Citroen were ahead of their time back then. Now they put padded panels on their cars for city drivers - what went wrong ?

My guess would be it didn't make the reserve. Looking on ebay £62k is WAY too cheap. Here is a comparable on for within an ace of £200k:

It’s a lovely looking car but £200k?
If you’re gonna pose, you might as well buy a brand new Ferrari for that money.

Looks perfectly affordable to me. Just sell one of ya BTLs then you can buy it!
You could probably still even rent it out for £1k a month just like you did the BTL.... or £1k a week even.
Now there's a thought....

Yes, after paying for insurance you might be left with a couple of quid.

I’m more likely to own a Ferrari than a BTL. Leeches.

My guess is the reason renting out classic cars (in preference to flats and houses) is not a hot business would be the low rate of return. In both senses.
And the lack of gearing, lol.
