When I was a schoolboy, I remember listening to the TT races, late 1940s, and it would be "Over to Murray on the Mountain". He was just the same then.

I was watching some BTCC highlights from the 90s a couple of weeks ago and it had the classic clip of 2 Toyotas taking each other out with the Murray comment of "the car on it's roof is a Toyota!" Still makes me laugh 20+ years later!

He may well be a legend in motor sports. Good luck to him if he is. Motor sports has always seemed to me to be a rather over hyped kids game.

Murray Walker never took himself seriously. He was an enthusiast. I think it was his enthusiasm for commentating that I shall remember. That and the thought that at any moment out would come another comical comment.

Yes, my friend once referred to the game of table tennis as "ping pong" to a professional table tennis player. That went down a treat. And the correct name for baseball is rounders, obviously.

I'm sure there must be more examples...

Wasn't there an serious but unsuccessful attempt about three or four years ago to have chess accepted as an olympic sport?

Try telling a seven foot tall US basketball player that his sport is properly called netball. Or, indeed, tell an American football player that over here we play it without all that gimpy protective gear.

We should have a vigil in his memory, I gather Clapham is nice at this time of year, although obviously it would make sense to wait until it is no longer illegal
