Helebores

I cannot find the post but not so long ago someone posted about their hellebores coming on and maybe in flower. I can report from West Perthshire that only in the last couple of days are mine in flower, grateful though I am for them. I love these because they seem to me to be the harbinger of summer. I think of them as the Lenten Rose but I guess there are many more than that. Still, it is great to see spring at last.

I first mentioned hellebores after visiting a garden at Clayton, under the north side of the South Downs. In mid-February they were in full flower. I guess there is 500 miles or so distance to account for the time delay.

The helebores have been flowering just south of the Campsies for several weeks - but much later than usual.
The brief warm spell last weekend brought on a lot of bloom which has been held up by the cold spring - our camellias have erupted - apparently opening all of their buds at once. Our mid season rhododendrons are starting to bloom, and I have noticed that one of our meconopsis is sprouting a bud.

We returned from Australia a month ago and our Hellebores were in full flower then, as they still are. We live in the South East.
I love them, every year they signal Spring and it gives me a lift.

PS - our Camelias are having a great year and lasting much better than usual.
