The Lemon Fool

It was tough on the loch yesterday evening. The water is warm and the trout are lying low. There is a fair amount of algae, making water visibility poor. Yet over flies the Osprey on high, patrolling back and forward a few times, then it dives, splashes, and rises off the water with a good sized trout. How does it do it? There are a few unsuccessful fishers who would like to know.

Only time I have personally seen an Osprey hunting was at a reservoir in London!

Indeed. It must make the patient fishermen who take boats and sit for hours on Rutland Water green with envy when an osprey from the breeding colony there swoops from nowhere and effortlessly scoops up a trout while they were busy watching a hovering red-tailed kite plummet on to a mouse on the shoreline.

Its interesting what we take delight in, and what we hate! OK - in spite of being jealous about its success, we look forward to watching the Osprey in action. We tolerate the Herons, and enjoy spotting an Otter. But we hate the Cormorants. Yet they all eat our fish. There are now Red Kites in Scotland - but not yet in our area.

With this extended spell of hot and dry weather, the trout are lying deep down, and only the perch are active on the surface, so after beating up and down the loch many times the Osprey had to settle for a small perch (as also had I).
