Why do my Rose Flowers die after a day

#159676

Postby Andy46 » August 14th, 2018, 9:16 pm

Hi,

I planted a rose bush in a large container earlier in the year. Its grown well and has plenty of buds, however when they bloom they literally bloom and die within 48hrs. Is this normal? I'm by no means a gardener btw, I just stuck the bush in a large container for a bit of colour.

Thanks

That's unusual. Do you water the plant? If not - it could be drought. If you do, has the container got drainage holes - if not, it could be waterlogged. But in either of these cases I would have expected poor growth. But you say the plant is healthy. I'm puzzled.

Another possibility is temperature shock. If the container is in a bright sunny position, then with recent weather conditions, it could become very hot, then with clear skies at night the temperature will drop, and this cycle could lead to flower drop - although I must say that roses are usually pretty hardy - they even grow in the far north of Scotland with little attention!

Hi,

Ta. They are in direct sunlight in a south facing garden. I'll see how they go next year then probably replace for something else if it keeps happening.

My feeling is that this is due to water stress, and maybe also lack of feeding. I think roses are fairly drought tolerant plants (they stayed healthy in my garden this summer, even though the soil was drier and more cracked than I have ever seen it). However, they can probably withstand drought planted in garden soil because of a deep root system, which of course they don't get in pots.
