While you where having fun in the summer of 1986 I was on a fort on Baltic sea doing my national service. That's 11 months I'll never get back. What did I learn? Well I can probably make any AK47 derivative work and I can make my bed very tidy indeed.

We did have a c-cassette player there and this is what was on

And this

I became an anglophile some years earlier trying to decipher letters from South Africa sent by my cousins and my band's lead man having a holiday in London and telling me how beer is ordered..."One pint of your best bitter please"

The Genius of Ray Charles (1959) full album

I really like this type of big band string style

edit: top tip! I am finding this new technology as I go but I like the full albums on youtube, soundtrack suites etc, so on my very smart TV I have youtube app and I can listen to all kinds of albums on TV, sound quality seems very good to my ears.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug7oyobYONk 'ZZ TOP - BROWN SUGAR - 1971'

Hadn't realised ZZ went back that far!
I came upon the above-linked via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQtAp0-viJw 'ZZ Top with John Fogerty play Creedence best Hits!'. I hadn't realised John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival [Woodstock etc] was still going. He did some shows hooking up with Billy Gibbons of ZZ-Top, and this vid is a teaser/taster of them playing together. Sounds pretty good to me!

Nostalgia lifts its ugly head again, Feargal Sharkey, 1985-6, I was slaving away on a rock, Baltic sea, I managed to hide a small c-cassette player and in the evenings we would gather around after the name call, listen to this western music, seemed so free, the lyrics. How could they do that? Didn't they have a governmert to rule otherwise? what was all this freedom about? People could just have say 2-5-1 progression freely and government would not oppose?

Never heard of John Littlejohn. Unspectacular but not bad.

While listening to John Littlejohn on Spotify, I happened upon Magic Slim. I've heard of him but don't remember listening to any of his music.

Absolutely brilliant! Try this live performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7ZaFdpTG8g
Some great 12-bar boogie and a great voice.

I also found his album "Alone and Unplugged", not surprisingly just MS and acoustic guitar (sorry, can't find a link, but it's on Spotify). Some really sensitive acoustic guitar, and includes John Lee Hooker's classic Boogie Chillun.

He's become an instant favourite of mine.

I agree, never heard of him, not spectacular but OK, hit the bill. I prefer Memphis Slim to Magic Slim. Also Magic Sam is very very good, a full album linked earlier in the thread.

Something different Johnny Moore and the 3 Blazers, west cost blues...
