6/10. Enjoyable undemanding feelgood British romantic comedy featuring 60-year olds, with quite a few laughs.
The pitch - "OK guys, here's the plot - life begins at 60, it's set in cool bits of London, there's dance classes and a mix of characters".
Producers - "Sounds promising, tell us more".
Pitcher - "Er. That's it. That's all I've got. Isn't that enough?".
Producers - "Oh well. Notting Hill, 4 Weddings and a murder with Hugh Grant, they were set in London and made a load of money. What the hell, let's give it a shot. Obviously we need Hugh Grant, we could pack in a few other good (but cheap) British actors, hire someone to write really good dialogue, set up a few sub-plots, and you never know, it might work".
And that's what happened, although they didn't get Hugh Grant and they had to chuck in some extra scenes in Rome to entice the good actors into this. The "storyline" is so formulaic and utterly predictable you'd think it was produced by Siri, but there's oodles of great dialogue, good performances, and both very funny lines and scenes, also with a few very touching moments. Features Celia Imrie, Imelda Staunton, Timothy Spall and Joanna Lumley (she plays herself).
Sample bit of dialogue from La Lumley. "I've had 5 marriages. The last one ended for religious reasons. He thought he was God. I didn't."
