R Lee Ermey - RIP

R Lee Ermey has died at the age of 74.

Anyone who's seen Full Metal Jacket will know that the film would never have been the masterpiece that it was without R Lee Ermey playing Sergeant Hartman-

Ermey was originally hired only as a technical advisor on the film, having served as a drill instructor in the marines, where he'd completed tours of Japan and Vietnam in the 60's and 70's.

Stanley Kubrick was so impressed with his work as an advisor that he was drafted in to play the Gunnery Sergeant Hartman role itself, rather than just advise on the film....

Cheers,
