Secondhand review courtesy of Mrs.Zico who confirmed my suspicions that it would be a cheesy and formulaic attempt to cash in on the success of the first film, starring Meryl Streep. This one is a prequel where Meryl Streep makes pretty much a cameo appearance in return for a big cheque, and Julie Walters is wasted in this.
Incidentally the plot of the Mamma Mia musical which has been praised as original is a straight lift from the 1968 film Buono Sera Mrs Campbell.

Re: Mamma Mia - Here I go again
The film is a prequel and sequel, cutting back and forth between the follow on from the last film and the events which led up to it, so Lily James, playing the young Donna (Meryl Streep only makes a fleeting appearance) and Jeremy Irvine, Josh Dylan, and Hugh Skinner playing the younger versions of Pierce Brosnan (who still can't sing), Stellan Skarsgard, and Colin Firth.
Cheesy and formulaic, absolutely. Of course there is no real story, how could there be when you are trying to create the film around a bunch of songs where the only commonality is Abba. However it's summer fun and everyone in the packed cinema including me (who doesn't like musicals) had a great time, including the groan when Andy Garcia's name is revealed.
And if you do go to see it, do stay to the very very very end after all the credits.

I loved Peter Rosenthal's review from The Onion, some real food for thought (some strong language for those of a delicate nature):

Re: Mamma Mia - Here I go again
The first film was probavly the worst film I have ever seen with the most cringeworthy performances and dreadful singing especially from Piers Brosman. I won't be watching the latest version.

Somebody must hate Pires Borsman because modern technology can enable any recorded voice to sing (probably even Boris Johnson).

Just to say that I have just been to see this film and to be brutally honest, its rubbish and not in the same street as the first Mamma Mia film.
The acting was poor, the original cast were mainly just cameo roles but was hoping to hear some great Abba tracks and there was none and you would see and hear better performances at any Karaoke session down at the pub.
I was ready to leave the cinema after half an hour but stayed for an hour and it still didn't improve. Maybe the ending was better but I didn't want to waste more time than I had already. I told the girls who sold me the ticket in the Foyer later and they said it was made for younger audiences but I said the title was misnamed as it wasn't really Abba type panash I expected like in the first film.
So save yourself some money and if you are tempted with a DVD, 99p is about right...
I'm a great Abba fan and its just my opinion on this erm...film!
