3/10. Not supercalafragilisticexpialidocius, despite having Emily Blunt, Julie Walters. Meryl Streep and Colin Firth. Overlong running time at 2 hours 10 mins.
It copies the original 1960's film in many ways, but with a different plot, and with the original kids now grown up and with kids of their own. Mrs.Zico informs me the plot is based on the second Mary Poppins book.
Original film - lots of memorable songs. New film - zero memorable songs.
Original - Chirpy cockney character from the US (Dick van Dyke). New film has Lin Manuel-Miranda (writer of "Hamilton").
Original - lots of chirpy cockney chimney sweeps who dance. New film - lots of chirpy cockney lamplighters who dance.
Both films have a scene with a mix of live actors and animation, which was a first in the 60's for the original.
The kids are a lot stroppier and noisier than the original film's kids - probably no surprises there.
I usually really like Emily Blunt but she's nowhere near as good as Julie Andrews, and you get the impression Emily/Mary doesn't actually like kids.
Julie Walters dials in another Mrs.Overall performance. A few good cameos from people who were in the original film.
