I always wonder why a film is nominated for an Oscar(got to be good right?) and then when its nominated 10 times as in "Roma" thought I would give it a go. Well totally perplexed. Very slow. Yes its artsy, good black and white photography, depicted the time very well and with detail. A few critics comments, "Spellbinding", and "from start to finish I was stunned" to "so emotional". Here is one review.

They raved on about Moonlight, La La Land and Manchester by the Sea, and they were all utter rubbish. Not saying Roma is at all, but 10 Oscar Nominations? What am I missing here? 4.5/10

Re: Roma
Agree to dis agree, I enjoyed Roma, but best picture of the year? It is slow but always interesting. I've lived a few years in France and watched several films that I have enjoyed and have come out thinking I wonder what that was about!
I also liked Manchester by the sea and Moonlight. To me great characters well developed.
La la land & Shape of Water total over rated rubbish.

Re: Roma
Oscar films have to be good? News to me. What usually helps is if the the plot is easy to understand, if there are lashings of maudlin sentiments, a happy ending and it really helps if the movie is about the Holocaust, Blacks or Gays. The awards are chosen by gay liberal Jews, after all
But the odd "art film" slips in and perhaps Roma is one. Haven't seen it because I haven't fancied it so far.

Re: Roma
Reviews seem to be split between 10, 5 or 1 ( out of 10)
10 for the professional movie critics and arty cinema lovers.
5 for those who could see the value in the cinematography but nothing in the plot (me included).
1 for the rest who'd rather watch paint dry or are waiting for the next instalment of Transformers or some other Marvel/DC claptrap.

Re: Roma
Watched it last night, tempted to turn it off halfway. Pretty boring sweet story line, no real drama but it did convey love. Its easy to make any picture look Arty in B/W, so I'd give it a 4. Baffled by the award. Suppose it must be the best in a sea of mediocracy, its been a bad year for decent films.
