BlacKkKlansman

4/10. Disappointing fact-based drama directed by Spike Lee about a black policeman infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan set in the 1970’s

There are a lot of interesting political points raised in the film about what it’s like to be black in USA, with some very clear references to the Trump era, and some interesting and powerful scenes which get you thinking, but the plot development is a terrible mess, to the extent you are constantly thinking “that’s just stupid, they’d never do that, that doesn’t make any sense at all” so it just doesn’t draw you in. The last couple of minutes features documentary footage from Charlottesville, which has an impact far greater than the rest of the film.

There are a few funny moments, but I expected it to be a lot funnier (and generally better) than it was. I’m surprised it’s received a Best Picture nomination, and amazed that Spike Lee is short-listed for Best Director.

I'd be interested in what others feel aboiut it, as it was described to me as the best film of 2017 seen by a cinema projectionist chum...

Err... How does that work?

That's what I feel, and I haven't even seen the film. ;)

He contacts them by phone, and sends a white policeman to stand-in for the face-to-face meetings. His phone conversations with the KKK pretending to be a bigoted white guy are the funniest bits of the film.

I enjoyed it but plot development was a bit daft. More interesting was pointing out what it was like being black in the'70's has it changed that much?
A decent film but not much more than that.
