A new national classical radio station was launched last week, the first for about thirty years since Classic FM. It is called Scala and it is available online and via DAB, but not FM or Freeview. It calls itself “classical music for modern life” and plays popular classical music, show tunes, ambient music and film soundtracks. Its most well known presenter is Simon Mayo, formerly of Radio 2. Others include Mark Kermode and William Orbit.
I have listened a fair amount over the past week and don’t think I have heard anything longer than five minutes. By contrast Classic FM, while playing short pieces during the day, has its “full works concert” in the evening.
It is interesting to see a newcomer to the classical music field. I wish Scala radio luck.
