Long Shot

7/10. US satirical scattergun comedy about the shallowness of US politics. There are quite a lot of laughs, always handy for a comedy, with little nuggets of cleverness and depth. Basic plot is that Michael Moore teams up with Hillary Clinton to remake the Odd Couple.
Charlize Theron plays a presidential hopeful who needs the endorsement of a dumb incumbent president who only cares about his personal ratings (obviously this could never happen in real life). Charlize is told by her media people that she needs to improve her "Sense of Humour" poll ratings so brings in uncompromising shaggy-bearded journalist Seth Rogen to add humour to her speeches. Seth SHOUTS. Almost ALL THE TIME. Because he's THAT KIND OF GUY. Lots and lots of all types of gags in this film - childish, visual, subtle, satirical, silly, obvious, gross - so there's something for everyone. There's a clever scene near the end about challenging preconceptions and prejudices, and how clever people can be blind to what they don't want to see. The film gets a bit preachy near the end when telling Americans some home truths about themselves, but this is done fairly entertainingly.
Charlize is great at playing a nasty person, but I never find her believable when she's being nice.
