X-Men Dark Phoenix

1/10. Desperately lame superhero prequel film.

Opening scene is of a young girl in the back seat of her parent's car as they drive along a very quiet tree-lined rural backroad with gentle curves on a sunny day, which as all film-goers know, are extremely dangerous roads, particularly for parents. The film also reminds us later on that helicopter pilot is not a job with long-term survival prospects.

I'll start with the good bits about this film.

Now onto the bad bits. It's incredibly lazily written and directed and it's just plain dull. Here's the plot outline - tragedy, off to X-men school, big action sequence, X-men argue, tragedy, X-men arguments, big action sequence, arguments, big action sequence, really really big action sequence, pathetic bit of moralising at the end - something, something about evolving. The cast seem to be putting in the same effort as the writers, but you can't really blame them. Jennifer Lawrence is in it, presumably due to a contract she signed before she got really famous.
