5/10. Satire on US TV starring Emma Thompson as a host of a long-running late night show.

Emma Thompson is good in this as a sharp-tongued presenter who is mean to her writing team. There are quite a few sharp and funny barbs about white male privilege, entitlement, feminism and tokenism, but too many of the key ideas of the film just don't hold together. To give one example, Emma Thompson's character is supposed to be a driven perfectionist, but somehow she hasn't noticed falling ratings over the past decade. One of these films where characters have to change their personalities just to fit in with the demands of a particular scene. The writers don't appear to have decided what sort of film they wanted, or maybe it was written by committee. Another film that could have been so much better with some decent writing. (I may have to start adding this sentence to every single review I write!).
