Glastonbury highlights?

Glastonbury highlights?

Got to be Hot-Chip up to now, for me, and whilst I may well have missed some coverage, and actually like Hot-Chip gernerally, it feels like a particularly poor line up for Glastonbury 2019.

Anyone seen anything they think has stood out yet?

Cheers,

Tame Impala for me. Never heard of him/them before Friday night. A Modernist take on Pink Floyd.

Stormzeeeeeeeee.

What I've seen, which is little, suggests the whole place is full of poseurs, playing to the cameras for their 10 seconds of fame, getting in the way of the audience behind them.

Not like proper festivals in the days of old.

How can you top The Killers and Johnny Marr playing This Charming Man and then Mr. Brightside? Sorry, no contest!

I agree though, a really boring lineup this year. Liam Gallagher was just so lame - loads of forgettable songs with some Oasis covers thrown in to keep the crowd happy. Dreadful. I loved the Cure back in the day but wouldn't pay a pound to go and see them these days. Seeing Robert Smith in the here and now just scared the living daylights out of me and reminded me how ridiculously old I am getting.

I feel sorry for the poor Beeb presenters who have to make out everything is "awesome" and "amazing". No it's not, it's just illustrating how truly awful most current music is. And some acts just don't work in that environment. I enjoy listening to Kamasi Washington, but come on, not at Glastonbury. It just doesn't work.

And the crowd are just all so shiny and nice and it's all so bloody corporate. Only people who made money when I went were CND! And some of the acts have dancers - what on earth is going on? I went in 1985 when there was deep mud everywhere. The security of the Pyramid stage consisted of two blokes turning a large metal roller to stop the hippies (who were off their nuts on LSD) from storming the stage. One of them made it over the roller and was only a couple of feet from lamping Terry Hall (who'd spent the entire Colourfield set slagging off hippies) when he was rugby tackled by one of the guards. Hilarious to watch and much better than listening to The Colourfield :)

I rather liked Foals rather short set (or maybe the beeb just cut it to half an hour), they had some bite to them, and "My Number" is a modern gem. Can't find it on iPlayer this morning but it was on the second half of Nenah Cherry, no idea why.

And yes, The Killers were good, and the Johnny Marr bit at the end was great. Though for me the set sagged a bit in the middle with too many mid tempo songs, but that's probably just me being picky.

Yes. I like Foals too but missed them. I will try and track them down on iPlayer. The bit I saw of Sharon Van Etten also looked interesting.

Agree about the mid tempo songs. Worth waiting for When You Were Young at the end though. Very apt, as I was jumping round the living room like an 18 year old me :-)

I thought they were very weak apart from the couple of great tracks that they've got, but I wasn't too impressed when it was announced they were headlining, and I'm sorry to say that I didn't see anything to change my view.

I read somewhere on-line that Flowers has the sort of personality that you'd want to program a robot Maître D' with, and I think that sounds about right......Nice guy, but headliner Rock and Roll? Sadly not....

Just my opinion, but I thought there were very few highlights from what I saw on TV, and we followed it quite a lot over the three days.

A fallow year when they weren't supposed to be having one....

I agree. When did rock music get so bloody nice? It's just about the only saving grace of having Liam Gallagher about!!

As someone that grew up listening to the Clash and any music I could find that my parents generation hated I don't understand modern youth culture - it's lazy isn't it? They listen to the same music as their parents! Glastonbury used to be all about youth counter-culture, "normal" people didn't go there, and now it has become as homogenised and commercialised as everything else in life. I find it so frustrating when I talk to my 17 and 18 year old nieces; it's like their brains have been conditioned into thinking the same way as everyone else by staring at their smartphones for too long.

Anyway, I know it's probably just me. If I see a crowd, I walk in the opposite direction. At least that attitude has served me well in making investments :-)

My initial thoughts on Glastonbury - I was on the IOW for the weekend.

I thought drinking for 12 hours solid had numbed my senses but it's true.

The Killers at Glasto with the original drummer, new look bassist and replacement guitarist (no more Mark Stoermer and Dave Kuening) who both look about 60 accompany a cosmetically enhanced Brandon Flowers who now bizarrely looks about 19 years old.

As if this wasn't enough, Johnny Marr appears for a cover of 'Charming Man'. Excuse me but I now need a weeks detox and to lie down in a darkened room.

The Cure - Robert Smith's voice has aged considerably better than his body.

Yes, and as for the Pet Shop Boys, I wondered what Uncle Fester was doing on stage with The Killers, until I realised it was Neil Tennant. Unfortunately, I was born with an under-developed nostalgia gene and really don't see the point of these old bands turning out to play their greatest hits from 30-40 years ago. Obviously, they signed really rubbish deals in the past and still need the money. I find it pretty sad tbh.

As an exiled professional Mancunian, I enjoyed The Charlatans who support the right team.

It was also interesting that there now is a sizeable cordoned off rectangle in front of the main stage - presumably for VIP's. Sort of grates with the original spirit of Glastonbury.

And not one [expletive deleted] did a Fall cover in tribute to MES :-)

There wasn't a VIP area front of the stage last time I went. There's access to the backstage area down a path to the left of the stage (from the crowd side) but you can't watch the bands from there.

It's not. I think it's a safety feature, so you don't get so much of a crush in front of the stage. Or that there aren't a huge mass of people sqeezed together that move in a "blob", that's when bad things happen. Seems to be a curved shape, but doesn't go all the way to the front. I can't find any evidence of it not being VIP one way or another, but I think there would have been howls of outrage if there was. Like you say, not really in the spirit of things (though there's plenty of VIP hospitality and fancy prepaid tent areas that seem rather corporate right enough).

Mind you, even if you're right at the front, it looks like a long way from the stage to the first row. I mean, you're closer than the other plebs but...

Interesting. Thanks for that. I've been lifted off my feet at a football match and it was pretty scary. Makes sense and reduces the risk...

Not the best sound near the front - I normally aim for the area in front of the mixing desk (and fail, if it's busy)
I think I was so far back I was actually in Dorset when the Stones were on

Cheers! I've now looked through the whole line-up and can confirm iag's original assertion that it was not great, to say the least. However, there are a few things I missed (Hot Chip, Tame Impala, Cat Power, Chemical Bros) that I'll try to find on iPlayer to watch this week.

All the best, Si
