Peaky Blinders Season 5

#246982

Postby nimnarb » August 26th, 2019, 2:40 am

Was reminded on Beerpigs Board that this started again tonight. Not a spoiler, just thought it was a bit slow and trust it will build up to be just as good as all the other series.

Had a bit of a feeling, with it now being trendy and its transfer to BBC1 (when I originally watched and said 'Peaky Blinders' nobody had a clue what I was talking about), that it may have got rather up itself.

Whats with all the heavy Rock Music? That didnt fit at all. It came across as crass with wooden acting. Havent watched any since some of the first series. Turned it off.

Yup, I was disappointed too. Just about any drama set in the past seems to be full of anachronisms these days and this was no exception.

Some of the delivery was indeed wooden.

I wondered if the writer had been changed.

Telegraph gave it 4/5 stars though so obviously they must have thought it was up to par.

I wasn't so sure about the phone box on the top of The Lickey Hills...they wouldn't get that wrong would they? I tried to check if that was an anachronism...however, phonebox history is a subject for wearers of hooded coats ;) I must say, though, the horse shooting scene was realistic.

Oh, and the comment that the board contains women....more PC from the BBC.

We’ve yet to watch but I’ve read that series 5 begins in 1929. I have no hooded coat but my colleague, Mr W Pedia, gives a potted history of the Red Box (suggesting the dates are okay, depending on what you saw):

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_telephone_box

Unless you are querying whether there was one there back in the day.

Possibly a "K2" (I can feel the warm embrace of my parka ;) ). I Was also surprised by the elegance of the interior roof lighting...oh , the parka is getting a little warm now!

http://www.the-telephone-box.co.uk/kiosks/k2/

"HERITAGE LEGACY. Between 1926 and 1935 1,700 examples of the K2 were installed. They remain a rare sight outside of London"

So, I guess that whilst the K2 might have been around, to find one one on top of Lickey Hills would be doubtful.

It's the dialogue I find to be anachronistic. Specifically, the use of phrases from today in historical drama.

I find myself constantly thinking "They would not have said that". I try to ignore it but when there are so many it gets really irritating.

Peaky Blinders is most definitely not alone in this.

I haven't figured out whether the writers don't know or just don't care. I hope it's the latter.

Frankly, I thought some of the dialogue last night sounded like it had been written by a sixth former.

Completely agree about the women in the board room part. A really crass attempt to shoe horn in a contemporary issue. Another anachronism.

Still, I'll carry on watching. Not as if we are spoilt for choice.

Yes. I too was struck by its elegance. Don't remember that from my day.

Also, wrt the A & B button telephone apparatus itself, that was introduced in 1925 and, as mentioned, this episode of PB was set in 1929. So that's OK.

Lickeys! Brought back happy memories of uncomplicated days.

Agreed, they have never been stringent about the dialogue sounding strictly in period.

Come on! Strong women have ALWAYS been a feature in Peaky Blinders - so, unless you think that too is a "crass attempt to shoe horn in a contemporary issue." It certainly isn't anything new.

As before, we've yet to watch the current series but here's a list of NME's Top 10 up to series 3:

https://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/peaky-blinders-10-perfectly-anachronistic-soundtrack-choices-8397

One thing from there to note is it might be relevant as to how one watches, as it includes:

Note that the Netflix version loses most of these hits due to licensing issues ...

From elsewhere, Leonard Cohen apparently wrote some tracks specifically for the production.

You are not alone:

He is heading for them thar Lickey Hills. I used to sledge down those hills as a kid and don’t recall a phone box on top, less one that worked. But this one does. What’s more, it’s ringing.

The contemporary issue was about gender balance on company boards. The new board member had to specifically point it out which I thought was crass.

Agree completely about the strong women having always been a feature.

My goodness, they are plugging Peaky. Just heard a promotion for the soundtrack on Radio 4.

My wife, an ardent follower of Peaky, informs me that as a child she would visit her grandparents in Cofton Hackett and they would spend time picking billberries up Lickey Hills. She doesn't, however, recollect a public phone box up there.

Episode 2...Meh! Still wooden, somehow artificial, dark, brooding, not just in Brum, but everywhere, or is it just me not getting into this fast enough and have been spoiled in the past 4 season? Going to be one big slaughter house soon though, but really needs to push on now. Also, sometimes the music to me anyway, becomes irritating. Hmmm. Was so looking forward to this. Trying to find out if the directors/writers have changed?

Must admit, I thought episode 2 was an improvement.

Watched episode one last night; its a spoof right?
I think the acting has got worse each series and the storyline more improbable. But no doubt I shall watch all episodes and grumble into my scotch (not from the bottle though).

I think it could be seen as such. I was likely searching for a similar description in my initial post, that it felt rather like a self parody.

Yep! Still watching here, minus the Scotch.
