Where have all the good films gone?

Is it just me or over at least the last two/three years I can't really think of one memorable, extraordinary, wonderful, exciting, (you get the drift) film that I would want to see again. Perhaps I missed one or two, so open to all suggestions or comments. Not personally into Marvel type films...want to see a Casablanca, Where Eagle dare, One flew over the Cuckoos Nest, Lawrence of Arabia, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The French Connection, Midnight Express, Rain Man, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, even settle for another Brief Encounters!!! to name just a few.............

Or am I just getting old?

If you have BBC iPlayer try The Kings Choice.

It's a slow film and you can blink whilst watching. I believe it's based on the true story, which I always warm to.

You may also like World on Fire (BBC iPlayer). A series set in war time Britain.

Films only assume greatness with hindsight - I'm sure there are many from the last 20 years or so that will eventually appear in the 'all time greats' lists. Possibly not in the last 2 or 3 years..
I'm not really a film person these days so can't name any recent ones! Looking forward to seeing 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' when it appears on Amazon Prime

It's really very good, and if you're in to that kind of thing try: Bad Times at the El Royale, which flew under my radar

Can I suggest "Hidden Figures". It's about three African American women who were significant figures in NASA in the sixties and had key roles in developing the first space capsule to orbit the Earth, and beyond. A really poignant film especially if one was around in the sixties when the American Civil Rights movement was taking place.

Serious subject but sensitively filmed.

Had a free month from Amazon prime of Showtime and just seen "Escape at Dannemora", one series, 7 episodes, based on a true story with Benicio Del Toro and Patricia Arquette who was just simply outstanding in this. Basically a prison escape, slow in parts but very well executed and directed by Ben Stiller. Worth a watch.

Films, like many things are quite personal. One persons great is anothers persons bad! There are also types of films, Horror, action, si fi, rom com etc.

Often there are also expectations to manage, when you wait in expectation of a new great film and it fails to deliver it seems worse than when you enjoy a film more than you were expecting. Howard mentioned Hidden Figures, that was in the latter for me.

I also enjoyed a lot of the ones you say you dont want. Bohemian Rhapsody was the surprise for me as I decided not to view it as it was not my thing and I didnt have any Queen music but really enjoyed it when forced to watch it with someone else. The Equalizer 1 + 2 and Mission impossible were others I quite liked that have been watched more than once

A great list, with many of my favourite recent films in it.

Given how similar it is to my own tastes, I'm surprised not to see one stand-out 'good film' of recent years in it, which would be 'Arrival'.

I wondered if there was a reason for that, especially given what seems to be a similar science-fiction slant as well?

I thought it was a fantastic film, with a really quite superb score from Jóhann Jóhannsson that added to the atmosphere of the film brilliantly, as he did with both of his Sicario scores too. I can't imagine any of those three films being anything like as good without his fantastic soundtrack. He'll be sadly missed by a music industry that was really making the most of his talents.

I've yet to catch Bohemian Rhapsody or A Private War, but I will make an extra effort now that I've seen your list.

I think that's a pretty good shout, looking at directors for this sort of thing rather than just concentrating on individual films.

I do agree that PTA is a brilliant director, and I'm a huge fan, but I'd also add the following if we're looking to come up with a list of good directors to watch out for today -

A lot there never heard of........thx. I didn't much care for Rocket Man for some reason..perhaps was trying to compare with Bohemian and felt it wasn't even close. However, my OP was trying to name a truly memorable film over the last two/three years. Bohemian memorable? I suppose so but dont need to see it twice. Also agree with "Arrival" being a good film, but Contact was memorable for me and have seen it at least three times.

Arrival wasn't memorable for me, maybe I was tired when watching it so it passed me by a bit. It might be worth a retry and I will have to dig it out. I suppose I could have added Passengers and The Accountant which I have re-watched to the list also. Its hard to remember them all

Fisherman's Friends, for the other list, was another that was much better than expected, I really enjoyed it, its an uplifting film but not what I would call a classic.

I do like a film that kicks the sub woofers into life every now and again though and surround sound is very important. I find it hard to watch films now in 2.0. Sound does add so much to a film

I enjoyed Spielberg's 'Bridge of Spies' (2015)

The Coen Brothers had screenwriting credits, Tom Hanks gives his usual competent performance, Mark Rylance is excellent.

It's the story of the attempt to return Gary Powers to the US after his U2 is shot down over the USSR and the circumstance and machinations leading up to the prisoner exchange on the titular 'bridge of spies' in Berlin
