The Mozart of Rock. RIP. Jump and “Shred” it in heaven. Also to play with your son, special. He also played lead guitar to Michael Jackson’s “Beat it.”

well he played a pretty awesome solo for about 20 secs in it
- everything else (the cracking lead riff etc) was Steve Lukather who, according to interviews with Eddie, used to rib him about
A] the fact that Eddie was only paid in beer for his contribution to one of the biggest songs of the decade
and
B] Eddie took quite a bit of stick from people once the "secret" broke that it was in fact him and not just someone pretending to be him
No question that EVH defined his own genre, style and (brown) sound

Re: Eddie Van Halen. RIP
The focus there is on solos but one of the best things about EVH was that he 'played for the song', with some great riffs and fills, and never used a song to showcase his technique in a long solo (Eruption from the first LP is the exception but he used this as a warm up and the producer got him to tape it)
Good article here on the BBC

On record, he even kept his solos short, structuring them like mini-movements within songs, with a defined beginning, middle and end.
"I haven't heard anyone do a long interesting guitar solo outside of early Clapton," he observed.

Agree.
Other big VH faves of mine being "Panama" and "Hot for teacher".
