ReGenesis – Canadian Biopunk TV Series

#346394

Postby SalvorHardin » October 9th, 2020, 10:20 am

During the lockdown I’ve been working through my DVD boxed sets, rewatching my favourite shows. Having just finished “Elementary” (Sherlock Holmes in 2012 New York, a mere 154 episodes!), I’ve now returned to “ReGenesis”, a Canadian drama with an extremely strong biosciences focus.

ReGenesis was made between 2004 and 2008, and given the current coronavirus environment is extremely topical. It is set in a (fictional) biological research laboratory in Toronto (NorBAC) that is funded by the Canadian, American and Mexican governments. The plots have a very strong emphasis on bioterrorism, disease outbreaks and genetic manipulation. Here’s a paragraph cut from a review which sums up the show nicely:

“Canadian biotech drama ReGenesis has everything you'd want in a TV show—a cranky, Prius-driving scientist who makes House look congenial; bio-terrorist ebola; plastic-eating bacterium that nearly destroy the world; gene-tampered hockey players; and a short-haired, pre-Juno Ellen Page selling the hell out of a goofy ongoing emo clone/twin subplot.”

A friend with a strong biology background, says that the science in the show is extremely accurate but that some of it is in the class of “exceptionally difficult if not impossible to do even with today's technology” (but it makes for better plots, especially the cloning stories).

Fortunately for people like me who don’t have much of a biology background, the female lead is not a biologist. She's the director of the laboratory and is a handy excuse for the scientists to explain things in language that the rest of us can understand.

How to watch it? Good question. It’s not available on the UK versions of Netflix or Amazon Prime, I've just searched my Sky planner and it isn't being shown on any channel on the Sky box. It has been shown on the Sci-Fi channel. There are DVDs out there of all four series (13 episodes in each), though I’ve just had a good look around the internet and it seems that legitimate copies of series 3 aren’t available. There is a complete series set of Blu-Rays (and I believe DVDs). I’ve got the German and French versions of series 2 and 4 and can confirm that these have an English language soundtrack.

There are a few clips and trailers on YouTube (I've not linked to the trailer for series 1 as it is the trailer for series 3). The link below is a promo for series 1 which has the lead scientist talking about some the biological threats which humanity faces:

Here’s a 4 minute feature where the team behind the show, and some of the actors, talk about it
