Thoroughly enjoyed it, something for everyone in this. 8.5 / 10

An emotional ride, a story of strength through religious principles but for the greater good.

Oh and its a true story, perhaps when hero's existed.

8/10. Fairly simple story effectively and convincingly told.

A war film about a man who joins the US army in world war two, but refuses to use a gun because of his religious principles. First half of the film is set in USA with him struggling to be accepted as a non-shooting infantryman, against the weight of convention from the US army. Second half is set on the front line in Okinawa, has very realistic action scenes, lots of tension, and is pretty visceral (including in the medical sense of the word). If you don't like gory stuff, this really isn't the movie for you, but the gore is pretty much essential to the story. (Similarities with Saving Private Ryan, in terms of level of realism.)

It's about bravery, both the normal bravery under fire, and also the bravery (or stupidity) of holding onto views that everyone around you disagrees with.
Lead character is likeable as a simple soul wanting to do what he believes is the right thing.

About 2 1/4 hours long, but didn't feel that long. Oddly enough, the part of the movie that felt a little too exaggerated to be believable is actually true.

Spoiler Alert.......................see below for those who have seen it as I need an explanation please.
Yes, excellent..8.5/10.

I didn't understand the early part in the film when the two brothers were fighting each other and one of them hit the other with a brick.........who hit who and didn't truly understand what this had to do with it all....probably wasn't paying attention or had a quick drink but as in the scene where Desmond Doss held a gun to his fathers head and promised never again to hold a gun, was this the same when he was younger and he was the one who used the brick on his brother and promised to never use violence again..or the other way around?? And if so, what was the point of including this in the film?

Reply to spoiler question - don't read on unless you really want to!

The earlier sequences had Desmond as a child thinking for a few minutes that he'd killed his son, was traumatised, and looked at the wall poster showing the 10 commandments. The sequence with his father and the gun made him realise that if he had a gun, there was a chance he would kill someone if he was provoked, which explains (sort of) why he refused to even touch a gun when in the army. (He could of course have just done his training with a gun to pass out, but then not used a gun - either this is the film adding something for dramatic effect, or maybe showing that Desmond wasn't that bright and didn't think things through that well)
