Why are (were) there so many films, stories, and plays about the above topic?
The usual scenario seems to be a bunch of disparate rellies arriving at a spooky country mansion to hear of a peculiar reading of the will of the supposedly deceased wealthy elderly uncle.
There are surprises and shocks and even deaths at this gathering.
(Currently watching 1961 "What a Carve Up")
Is this distressing human experience described so often theatrically something that occurred frequently during the 20th century? Why so?

"The Cat and the Canary "was my favourite when I was younger.
I think will readings were more common in the past , suggestions online that this may be because not everyone back in time was literate, and of course it does tend to be more American films that feature such events.

We watched Cat and Canary recently with Honour Blackman. Apparently, this particular book from America had been made into films over many decades.

Re: Films about Reading of Wills
I am with Charlottesquare on this one. I think we tend to be a bit more open about our intentions these days before we go although I would like to think that I may have one or two little surprises in my own Will.
As it happens, I am, later this morning, seeing my solicitor about a modest update to my Will.
