Dopesick - Disney

It's a drama series based on true events about a new drug, a pain-killer released in the US in 1996. The drug is called Oxycontin.

It gets off to a very slow start in the first episode.

But after that I've found myself immersed in some deep emotional feelings. At any level this series is viewed from it will challenge thought. Mainly because it's true.

There's little I want to talk about as I've not go to the end of the series ... it comes out weekly.

If you enjoy true life drama then this is as good as it gets.

Over 500,000 Americans died due to Oxycontin. That's a conservative number.

The Sackler family who brought it to market, some would say aggressively, made a multi billion dollar fortune. The same family marketed Valium from 1968 through to 1982.

Purdue Pharma had sales reps earning over $250,000 per year, incentivised by their sales returns.

Let's just get this straight. Approximately 50-60,000 Americans died in the Vietnamese war. Over ten times that died due to Oxycontin.

I'm bumping the topic, I know. Apologies. If you have access to Disney you should watch this series, in my humble opinion.

It's beyond belief. You couldn't make it up.

Netflix have brought out a series very similar to this.

It's called Painkiller.

There are 6 episodes.

Or, if you prefer, read the book Dopesick. The balance between incentive to develop drugs and rampant capitalism gone wrong. Tricky balance I expect.

Cannot get Disney - so started Painkiller. Entertaining in a macabre sort of way - as if Joe Orton wrote the script (yes I know he's been dead for many decades). Not sure that the subject matter needs such over the top acting and script. Nevertheless interesting - probably a 6/10.

Appreciate you can't get Dopesick, which is a shame as of the two it's far better. At least a 9/10. If you have Netflix I'd also suggest you watch Dirty Money and in particular "Drug Short". It's about Valeant Pharmaceuticals.

Thank you

Take care
