Justified is returning to TV, with Raylan in Detroit

It's been seven years since the modern day western TV series "Justified" ended, with the characters riding off into the metaphorical sunset.

Ealier this month they started filming a sequel, "Justified: City Primeval", which is set mostly in Detroit. Like Justified, this too is based on an Elmore Leonard book, "City Primeval: High Noon In Detroit". Timothy Olyphant returns as US Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens, a 21st century lawman with a 19th century attitude.

Several of the creative team behind Justified are working on this show. There's no news of any more characters from Justified appearing in City Primeval, except for Raylan's daughter (who is being played by Timothy Olyphant's daughter).

No trailers so far. Given that they are expecting to finish filming in August, I'm not expecting to see this on TV until the New Year. Yeah, I loved the previous seasons - I think I caught them all but would have to watch the last few episodes before starting on this when it comes out.

Raylan in Detroit could be a remake of the Death Wish movies. The perfect location for taking out the trash . .

I'm using it as an excuse to rewatch the entire series :D

I can't see there being too much of a connection between City Primeval and Justified except for Raylan, because eight years have passed and most of the major characters in Justified are one of: dead, in prison for a very long time, in witness protection, on the run from the law, in hiding, retired.

That said (not naming names) I could see the character who was last seeing getting away from Harlan in a dog grooming van turning up as he did have very strong connections with the Detroit mob. The actor was seen in another show ("Angie Tribeca") where his character used a very similar dog grooming van. Much like Olyphant has played characters who are very similar to Raylan Givens in other shows such as "The Mandalorian", "The Grinder", "Fargo" and "The Good Place".

"Earlier in the year, Olyphant appeared in The Good Place as an imagined version of himself sporting Raylan’s look. Explaining to the A.V. Club on how he pitched Olyphant the part, Good Place creator Mike Schur said “When I was explaining the role to Tim on the phone, he said, ‘Am I myself, or am I Raylan?’ And I said, ‘No no no: You’re you, but I think you’re edging toward the Raylan side of things.’ And he went, ‘Full Stetson?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I think Full Stetson sounds right.’” Even in the afterlife, you can count on Olyphant doing his charming lawman schtick."

The first episode of "Justified: City Primeval" will be broadcast in America on July 18th on FX. There is an earlier private showing at the ATX Television Festival on June 1st. No mention yet of a UK airdate, but given that FX is now owned by Disney there's a reasonable chance that it will be on Disney+. No news of any other characters returning from Justified, though I'd expect the production team to try and not broadcast any returnees.

"City Primeval takes place after Givens’s work in Kentucky is finished, with the U.S. Marshal living in Miami before he ends up in Detroit and involved with the case of someone known as the Oklahoma Wildman."

The first two episodes of Justified: City Primeval premiered in America last night. The reviews are pretty good, to put it mildly.

We get it here in the UK on Disney+ on September 6th.

All eight episodes are now on Disney+ here in the UK. I've seen them all and they're very good, though the series doesn't quite reach the heights of Justified (except in a couple of episodes), though that may be because I've seen Justified several times and am very familiar with it.

No spoilers here; except to say that the major villain(s) are a worthy addition to the group of Justified bad guys, there are several references to Justified (including four cameo appearances) and the ending leaves it wide open for another series (though if and when that happens is open to debate because of the writers' and actors' strikes).

The episodes are subtitled, which is helpful as there is quite a bit of mumbling and starting/turning up the music just as people start talking.

i will be buying the DVDs.

Enjoyed previous series but how many subscription channels can be Justified.

I guess we'll have to wait for them to come on DVD or something else that we have access to.

That's a good offer. Subscribe, binge watch what you want and then cancel.

I've subscribed to Disney+ since it launched in the UK, mostly because I was a Disney shareholder back then (sold most of the shares after they sacked Gina Carano from "The Mandalorian" - a clear signal that Disney was deliberately alienating a huge part of its customer base). Disney+ is my least used streaming service (of six); the only shows I can highly recommend on Disney+ are the first two series of "The Mandalorian", "Justified", "Justified City Primeval" and "Sons of Anarchy", plus they've got quite a few decent films.

I probably won't be renewing Disney+ next year, unless we're getting another Justified, hopefully with [SPECULATION BASED ON SPOILERS DELETED]

I saw the trailers for Primeval but hadn't seen Justified. Then it was a decision of do I go with the new thing or invest in seeing the whole thing from the start. The ratings seemed good.

Anyway it was a case of beg, steal and borrow. Fortunately I didn't have to wait years from the end of one to the start of the next. Definitely worth a watch.

Deadwood or Yellowstone might be on the watchlist.
