I was very young when I saw this and had nightmares for a long time after and refused to have piano lessons. Thought that Peter Lorre was the most creepy actor I had ever seen, and only much later realized what a great actor he was.

I love a good scary film, so I do need to mention one of the very best modern-day horrors, with a career-best performance by Toni Collette -

Hereditary (2018) -

As usual about 90% of replies have nothing to do with the topic.

I see it's now available to stream. I'm not sure if I should give it a go or wait until the UHD comes out.

Although I'm not sure that will be released until the new year.

Just been to see "Barbie" at the local cinema. Probably the greatest movie ever.

In answer to you question, for me it was No.

For context I didn't know it was based on a true story. I didn't know the history and I have been trying to avoid reviews as far as possible so that I could make my own views. I had seen bits of the trailer and some of the "Great" headlines including yours.

Scorsese, Dicaprio and De Niro would normally get me hooked. A bonus was Brendan Fraser. Unfortunately I fould it dragging and not very entertaining. It was an endured watch. I'm glad I didn't go to the cinema. We even considered switching it off for me to finish off at a later time.

The latter 3rd did pick up a bit and the ending explaination to wrap things up after having all that time felt wrong. Could only give this a 6 out of 10 but not even a recommended.

Personally I think this would have made a good TV series. I'm not sure what the message was supposed to be. It wasn't from those that were wronged but for the doers of wrong. It might have been better from an investigation prospective where things could be revealed. Was this a guilt trip to show how we, well not me in this case, did historic injustice.

I wasn't sure if Dicaprio had just seen The Godfather or if he had his wisdom teeth out. We're they too old to play the part. I'll have to check the history.

I can't see me wanting to watch this again really. Admittedly it was streaming which isn't as good as disc but I can't see that fixing many of the things I mentioned.

I'm glad you enjoyed it though. It's been a poor year for films

I think it will!
I don't think it has the right "amount of"/"eye for" editing for a movie - it feels flabby and unnecessarily so (it's not that that flab adds something)

Leaving aside the fact it's not "there will be blood" it's also not as tight as "the sisters brothers" or "slow west"
and not a patch on "power of the dog" (which it probably reminds me of most)

Recut for episodes I think it will feel better; consider how well "Godless" works BECAUSE the chapters are given the appropriate timing and framing... you don't try and digest them in one go

As it stands it's brilliant and in need of curation into the format that fits it best

The 21st century has still got a long way to go before we can decide on the greatest movie. The question is, can the eventual favourite measure up against the best of the 20th century - The Producers? ;)

I think "the greatest" and "my favourite" would be different. I could list the ones I've enjoyed the most and perhaps decide a winner. It'd probably be considered too lowbrow to be the greatest.

I remember having a similar reaction when I first saw it. Peter Lorre's performance is hauntingly brilliant, isn't it? It's funny how our perceptions change as we grow older and gain a deeper appreciation for the craft of acting. I'm actually quite new to this forum, so it's refreshing to stumble upon such engaging discussions.

I wonder if it's the greatest movie without an Oscar.?

Barbie managed more. Not that it makes much difference in my book anyway. I'm not even sure how you get nominated to begin with.

I watched Zone of Interest as it won best sound. I thought it clever but best?

Still there are some interesting films coming up this year. Gladiator 2. The original was nominated 12 times winning 5 including best sound. It's got Denzel in so it's got a lot to live up too.

The Accountant 2. I think this was panned a bit at the time but I added it to my guilty pleasure list. So on that basis and I found it entertaining, I'm going to look forward to both the films and Oscar nods.

You're up against Psycho, Shawshank Redemption and Taxi Driver among others there...

It varies a bit between categories but in general the film company/distributor submits a film for consideration by mid-November, there's two rounds of voting among the specialist branch of the Academy (so film editors vote for film editing etc) to generate first a shortlist and then a list of nominees, and then there's the final vote.

The Accountant 2.

I look forward to the crossover, with a swordfight on top of Charing Cross, "And I will have my vengeance, in Xero or Excel...."

As for current movies out, there are so many great options to catch in theaters right now. Personally, I've been really intrigued by the diversity in genres and storytelling. From heartwarming dramas to adrenaline-pumping thrillers, there's something for everyone. But circling back to that movie you mentioned, it's fascinating how certain films leave a lasting impression on us, shaping our tastes and preferences.
