"Don't Look Now," Minutemen (1984)

"Eight Miles High," Husker Du (1984)

A couple of '80s covers of '60s songs. Each very effective in its own way, IMHO.

Kurt Cobain interview 1993, a year before his death. I found it informative but also striking what a cogent, intelligent and thoughful person he was.

'Some of the Greatest Moments at Norman's Rare Guitars - Part 1'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI1RhFYwAc4

25 minutes of customers trying out vintage guitars at this^ LA guitar shop. They're all professional musicians, and some you might recognise or have heard of. What I also enjoyed was the wide range of musical styles on show, on various epic guitars, in a casual venue 8-)

Back in the 90s there were several spats between Killing Joke and Nirvana (mostly at management level) that, being based on respect for each others music more than plagiarism, rather nicely led to collaborations in both directions years later, with Jaz singing with The Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl playing drums for Killing Joke.

Nirvana admitted it and legally settled for damages, so not much doubt in this case.
But yes agreed, music since perhaps what 1200 on has just been interpretations and reinterpretations of beats/tunes/chords usually hinged on contemporarily fashionable chord structrues and hence moods.

Purcell's divine Come all ye sons of art [1694] was simply the 'posh 4-chord music' of the day :) I have no problem mentally skipping between such and 'punk' , post-punk etc.
Purcell: Sound the trumpet - Come, ye sons of art, away - Philippe Jaroussky

Thx! Didn't know that. I had a lot of time for KJ in the new-wave era, since when they're been v low-profile to me.
Found these on YT which were interesting....

The latter is/was the beast of KJ's 'anthem' song...

"Get Up and Go," the Go-Go's (1982)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzuSmH1I98A

Released more than 35 years ago, but this is one of those songs that always sound timeless to me. A joy to play at high volume, along with "She Loves You" by the Beatles and "Love Song" by Simple Minds.

Thought I'd put this one here too.

Heard of Mike Landau about a dozen years ago, but never really explored his work until now. Very accomplished stuff, but I particularly like this one. Laid back but with a bit of bite to it.

The whole ensemble is a joy to listen to.

Speaking of the Foo Fighters and 'collaborations', here's an impromptu one. I've seen this before and for some reason I remembered 'Kiss Guy' again today. He was an audience member at a FF gig this spring who held up a sign reading 'Let me play Monkey Wrench' and got invited up on stage to do just that. His story here:
https://www.loudersound.com/features/i- ... o-fighters

Some have suggested it was all pre-arranged but the band, who have a record of inviting up fans, and K-G himself swear it wasn't, and that it was exactly what it appears, just a request resulting in an invite.
And here is the result - WOOOOOOW!!! Imagine yourself in his shoes, he almost/90% owns that stage, and he works it, left, right, both wings, centre, jamming with all of them, and damn he's good, it's pretty incredible. Observe how the band members are all smiling... then perhaps imagine yourself as a youngster, a dyed in the wool fan, and that happening to you - just wow  8-)

"Everlasting Love," Carl Carlton (1974)

This version of the song went to #6 in Billboard's Hot 100 chart and is engraved on the soundtrack of my early adolescence.

'50 Years Ago: Cream Said Farewell At The Royal Albert Hall

50 years ago today, Cream's farewell concert at the Albert Hall, London.

'Cream’s farewell concerts were filmed by Tony Palmer, and the following year his insightful documentary was broadcast on the BBC to great critical acclaim. It was originally planned to release the concerts a double album, but eventually the idea was scrapped and instead Goodbye was issued in February 1969 with some live songs and three songs recorded at IBC Studios in London in October 1968; the live cuts were taken from a show at the LA Forum in October 1968.'

A rare example of a live concert of this genre from this time and 1hr10min long. Good production/sound quality too.
