Eddie Cochran. There can't really be anything left to say about this young fella who tragically died aged 21. By the time he met his unfortunate death he'd achieved more in his short life than others do in a lifetime. Regardeless of his multi chart successes he was one of the forerunners of guitarists using an 'uncoiled' 3rd string (G) thus allowing the note to be 'bent' a full tone, something any popular music guitarist does to this day.
He was also one of the first musicians to strip out the standard 1 - 4 - 1 - 5 - 4 - 1 blues chord sequence and replace it with a 1 - 4 - 5 chord sequence. For the non-initiated amongst you this may go someway to helpimg you to understand the principal.
He was technically savvy and clued enough to know that if he swaped out his Gretsch 6120 neck position De Armond Dynasonic pickup for a Gibson P-90 he would be able to achieve a more 'twangy' sound, on an accoustic electric guitar, which more fitted his style.
He was also a multi musician and an early expert at 'studio overdubbing' whereby he was able to play all the instruments and sing all the parts on several of his recordings.
All these innovative practices were undertaken whilst he was still a teenager.
John Lennon supposedly recruited Paul McCartney to his band The Quarrymen on the strength that McCartney knew all the lyrics and chord sequences to 20Flight Rock, written and performed by Cochran, in the 1956 film 'The Girl Can't Help It' featuring Jayne Mansfield.
An astonishing talent.

Having followed the thread, in the snug, on pay equality within the BBC I figured it would be appropriate to post a link to a live concert performance by what can justifyably be described as the "old site" resident house band, by default. This performance demonstrates their commitment and continued drive for equality within the workplace by realigning their original 100% male line-up to, on this occasion, a line up that now features 33% women. To acknowledge this forward step towards further equality, within the industry, this number embraces the inclusion of women in the line-up with a number being solely dedicated to the enhancement of the bands latest personnel additions. The women make their appearance about 50 seconds in.
I therefore cordially offer you all the TMF house band.

"One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer" - Amos Milburn (1953)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEpzqLPwG7Q

This is the original version of the song, which has been recorded many times over the years (sometimes as "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer") by performers from John Lee Hooker to members of the cast of Glee. It was written by Rudy Toombs, whose work also includes "One Mint Julep" (a #1 hit on the rhythm and blues chart for the Clovers in 1951) and other songs recorded by artists from Ruth Brown to Hank Snow. Milburn took "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer" to #2 on the R&B chart. Mickey Baker played the guitar part.

Milburn, who was playing tunes on the piano at the age of five and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 15 during World War II, knew a thing or two about drinking-related songs. His body of work also includes "Good Good Whiskey," "Bad Bad Whiskey," "Let Me Go Home Whiskey" and "Thinking and Drinking." He was among the performers who popularized the jump blues style of music, and Fats Domino cited Milburn as an influence.

Very familiar with that version because in the 80's I had quite a few of Route 66 record label records although my favourite was Wynonie Harris

This is a favourite from my younger days, which inspired the synthesiser on "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who

Terry Riley "A Rainbow in Curved Air". Love it!

Hmm, can't say I'm impressed by them. I bought Love Child many years ago, for reasons that are unclear to me to this day. Still got the album, and listen to bits of it every few years, but quickly decide it was a mistake.

They were an acquired taste. Marmite? Part of that 71-76 UK Progressive Rock era and were akin to ELP, Yes, Van der Graff Generator, Jethro Tull & Pink Floyd. Being fronted by Sonja Kristina didn't do them any harm as her dulcet toned voice smoothed out some of the 'progression'.
They were the first band to release a picture disc,"Airconditioning". Unfortunately technology in 1970 wasn't what it is today and the innovation affected the sound quality. This is off a non picture disc version. Very 70's.

Hard to believe that it's 40 years ago today that Elvis Presley died. Here are 2 in is memory.
It's thought the reason he never toured outside of the US was due to his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, supposedly being an illegal alien and would have struggled to obtain a passport.
