"Mockingbird," Inez & Charlie Foxx

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g47_NI1CWNQ

A no-questions classic from 1963, a very good year for music - other songs released that year included "It's My Party," Lesley Gore; "Sukiyaki," Kyu Sakamoto; "Fingertips Pt. 2," Little Stevie Wonder; "My Boyfriend's Back," the Angels; "Deep Purple," Nino Tempo and April Stevens; and "I'm Leaving It Up to You," Dale and Grace.

On the other hand, Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs somehow had a five-week run at No. 1 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart with "Sugar Shack," which remains inexplicable to me.

The Cranberries. To me they were one of those 'One year wonders', more or less. Like their light burned bright for an album or two, time and place, and then - poof.
Curious how we can 'celebrate' music like this, whilst over-looking that the ability to opine/express/articulate in such a way often leads to the death of the subject within a few short years.

See "The Sylvia Plath effect"

There seems to be a special relationship between poets and mental illness especially among women and I guess song writing and poetry are not that dissimilar.

Here's a couple of later outings for 'greenie' PG's now iconic and revered '59 Les Paul Standard which was used on the above track. Part of its uniqueness is that the pick is turned around so when you play with both pickups on in the middle position it creates an out-of-phase sound that sounds like a Fender Stratocaster.

For the last sale of 'greenie', it had been on the market for some years at $2million, I'm reliably informed the final deal went down at $1.4million.

Oops. That should read................... 'Part of its uniqueness is that the pickup is turned around so when you play with both pickups on in the middle position it creates an out-of-phase sound that sounds like a Fender Stratocaster'...........else it makes sod all sense as they haven't yet invented a 'pick' that when you turn it around it enables your Les Paul to sound like a Strat. Doh!

I've just finished modding my MIM Tele, I replaced the bridge with a vintage style one and the 6 saddles with 3 compensated brass ones. Then I paid £9 for the round string tree (basically a screw and a washer), total cosh just over £30, not too bad but unfortunately I have started to covet Lollar pickups so it can all escalate very quickly as one would need to solder stuff...

I have the sunburst one which is a classic colour but probably should've bought the candy apple red one...

As far as I could hear with my wooden ears and my tuner confirmed, the vintage 3 saddle bridge intonated better than the one where one can adjust each of the 6 strings.

Next step, learn how to play it!

I quite like some folky music, and I quite like clarinets/saxophones and the like. To combine the two, the continent seems the best place to go for mildly jazzy folk. Here's some slightly experimental French folk music then. I didn't quite find what I was looking for but:

https://youtu.be/rSpxUBncncI (trailer for their album)
https://youtu.be/eHIlbfYSpP0 (a concert with lots of that Breton little finger dancing)

The first albums I bought as a youngster were Supertramp
https://youtu.be/CpnlNA07glg
.. the jazzy/poppy piano in the second half of the track is the good bit. I couldn't find the album version on you youtube.

John Helliwell who played sax for Supertramp was probably a big factor in me playing the sax now (only not so well!)
I think he still tours around playing jazz. Here he is playing a Supertramp tune with a big band:

Many years ago bought The Temptations "Live at The Talk of the Town " LP at a garden/garage sale . It was a silly price , like 20p .
The last track called "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" , I had never heard before and there didn't seem to be any digital version of it at that time, so uploaded it to YouTube. (Plenty of versions now!).

Since Dennis Edwards passing away in the last few days thought I would replay it . Amazed to see it's had over 37000 views !

Ouch, that hurt my ears. She could crush broken bottles with that voice. Still, it's nice to hear that some of the traditional styles are still around, I suppose?

Have you heard of the band MC5? I was reading an article on them yesterday and it was one of those 'Why haven't I heard of this band until now?' moments. They were formed in Detroit (the MC in their name = Motor City) in the early 60s and must have been pretty big. They continued into the early 70s, with a surviving sub-set continuing for many years after that.
They are a blend of garage/psych/heavier rock, with a pretty animated stage act. They are said to have been an early influence that led into punk in the mid 70s in the US (New York Dolls etc).

Hi all

Enjoyed reading all of that.Memories of living in the UK.In the early 1970,s a band called Glencoe were the support act for Deep Purple touring with Machine Head, they were great.I think they morphed into being Ian Dury's backing band.

Pink Flord touring Dark side and being amazed at the quad sound at Newcastle Odeon.Still have the quad vinyl record

Van der graaf at Newcastle poly,a band called Capability Brown that were brilliant live.

Alex Harvey at the Mayfair bringing on the royal Scots dragoon guards for the bagpipes on Anthem.

Every Who gig being a disappointment, them walking off the stage at the Odeon touring Quadrophenia.Bob Pridden cued the tape wrong for Won't get fooled again after about 15 mins of the gig.Townshend spat the dummy and kicked over Entwhistle' s brass gear.Entwhistle looked as if he would kill him.No way would they come back on stage the b@&$+@ D's.Waste of ten Bob .The wonder of Colloseum live with all of them going flat out.à

John Peel really pushing 10 cc,and they were worth it,good live band.

Spider Murphy gang live in Germany,Hamburg.

The wonderful Joe Jackson gigs when he would tour Australia in the 1980,s.Absolutely brilliant, can still hear man in the street ,The big world tour,1983 I think.

Roger Waters is on in Perth tonight so I am off there now.
Have a good one
