Example: quite recent Neil Young [with the co-band Crazy Horse)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJge17kskwQ
Young & Crazy Horse, Austin City Limits, 1/13/2012
vs a more chilled early incarnation of his, solo concert, studio/live on the BBC 1971:
Neil Young - In Concert 1971 BBC [1080p]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6vp1EMnqho
See what I mean about getting much more angry the older he gets, rather unexpected ah?

Apologies if I've posted this before. I came across this vid in steps/tangentially this pm and am once again 'blown away by how good it is', or can be for those of us of a certain age.... Saw them play live in 1983, and it's honestly right up there as as good.

It's the combination of Billy Duffy's guitar and Ian Astbury's voice that aggregate to create a very special overall 'sound' and I love it! Forget any lyrics, it's the musical sound of a guitar and a voice that drives this song.
Whilst I never saw the The Cult, I did see Duffy and Astbury almost share a stage when they played the same concert for different bands in the early 80s, when Duffy was in 'Theatre of Hate' (still my all time favourite band, and still touring thank goodness), and Astbury was leading 'Southern Death Cult' as support band. Also saw the latter when they supported 'Bauhaus' a couple of times too.
Happy memories and a great video DE, atmospheric in the San Diego studio.

Fascinating Dave!
John Peel used to play the Southern Death Cult and I used to really liked their stuff. That was long ago, might you be able to suggest a representative Youtube vid of them? That wld be a hell of a blast from the past
As I recall around say '78-'85 was a period when some bands changed names, often in an evolutionary way. I think it was an idealist/artistic idea to wish never to become type-cast, a constant reinvention. A couple I recall:
Southern Death Cult > Death Cult > Cult
And another new wave band, in rough order went: Spizz Oil > Spizz Energi > Athletico Spizz 80

I never saw The Cult either, but 15 or so years ago, Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of The Doors put a group together with Ian Astbury as lead singer. They played under various names but I saw them as "Riders on the Storm" in Glasgow around 2005 and they were great, with Ian Astbury doing a very passable impression of Jim Morrison.

Yes, and despite seeing 'The Doors Alive' tribute band a few times recently, and looking forward to seeing them again in Nov, for some very strange reason although I was aware of the Manzarek, Krieger, Astbury band, I didn't go to see them. Wish I had so well done you!
As posted previously on another thread, if you get the chance to see 'the Doors Alive, and they're here in UK from the beginning of next month with a '50th Anniversary Tour', they are really good IMHO.

You missed a real treat, which sadly cannot be repeated. They did a brilliant job, and the Clydeside Auditorium (= Armadillo) was absolutely rocking

Prince, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and others -- "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SFNW5F8K9Y
Interesting mix of musicians (and their respective styles). And interesting to me to watch and see Prince apparently rather side-lined at the side. But then he does what he used to do best get central and shine. Wonderful.
Winwood is less obvious, on keyboards... heck of a musician and neighbour in the community, respect to him.

MC5 - Looking At You (Live 1970)
----------------------------------------------
Crossing the line from 'Woodstock love + peace' to early HEAVY rock n roll, perhaps even before Ozzy got there?

Yeah but... The others have skillfully created a foundation for the diva to build on. And his 'piece' is a bit of diva-ship, no less fun for it of course. The lead guitar is invariably where you'll find the showmanship [exception Keith Moon vs Townsend: Discuss hehe ?]
I like how Tom Petty sets the tone in this recording. I also wish we got to see more of Steve Winwood, a bit of a legend IMO....
