The first being by Lead Belly, and second by Credence Clearwater Revival.
As much as I like the latter, it's Lead Belly who was an originator and huuugely influential on the later music scene. Delta/[gospel]-blues/rock was the foundation of all later 'rock and roll', and all that evolved from it.
I've long thought if people want to understand what rock is, then they might - if in a hurry - start from Delta Blues/gospel c1920/30 on, as it's right there. More time? You can go right back, and back, into the 1200s and find the roots there too. A discovery that's much more fun than it might immediately sound IME :)

Agree. Like I said, just the hairdo tickled me so I suggested it.

It never made it into the UK 'hit parade' but featured in a commercial for Tampax. in 1999. How does that work out?

Originally penned by Joni Mitchell who, when performing this live on stage, introduces it with "now here's a Nazarethsong which I like to sing. The lady has class....go girl.

Ain't that the truth? I never did figure out what persuaded him to do that song. Awful words, indifferent voice (slightly pompous), and 100% pure schmaltz. Yuck. Either he was broke, or else he did it for a bet.

Still, as an exercise in poor taste, it pales into insignificance in comparison with this pre-Trumpian ode to the delights of dating your own daughter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0f48fpoSEPU. How the hell did they get away with that in the 1960s?

5 years ago tonight CBS aired the 2nd December recording of Kennedy Center Honors, 2012. The honorees included actor Dustin Hoffman, late night host David Letterman, Russian ballerina Natalia Makarova, Chicago blues musician Buddy Guy, and the three surviving members of "Led Zeppelin", Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Robert Plant.

This clip covers just the "LZ" tribute part of the proceedings. The introduction is by Jack Black (actor, comedian & musician) concluding with the words " best band ever." This is followed, by first, a short potted history of the band and continues with 4 well known ensembles performing covers of Led Zeppelin classics to what appears the full approval of JP, JPJ & RP.
Enjoy.

If you're a Randy Newman fan the two episodes of Mastertapes on Radio 4 are definitely worth a listen, here's the first episode:
