I was reading an article earlier, where Roger Daltry was lamenting what has become of rock since the 1970s. He mentioned a band I haven't heard of and said he's a fan and concluded 'perhaps there's hope after all'. He also said Jimmy Page is a fan and both have seen them play live. That doubly merited my checking them out. I see on youtube that their vids have millions of hits, so I expect they're pretty well known in the UK.
Interesting vid, just two musicians, drums and bass, but it's about as far from the 'Drum and bass' genre as you could get. The sound/feel is a throwback to early 70s 'classic heavy rock' [IMO]. I still haven't figured out how he so effectively uses a bass to cover what would usually require lead+bass. Interesting stuff, I'll be checking them out in more depth this weekend.

That's good stuff - whiff of White Stripes/Raconteurs, probably because of the stripped-back feel
Not sure if he's using alternative tunings/pitch shifter pedal etc.

For old fogies here, I probably had all the vinyl albums by Gene Vincent. No internet in the 70's and 80's...you perused the catalogue, phoned them up and mailed cash, rich posh guys would travel to London in the summer to buy these, and teach us how you order a beer ( pint of your best bitter please).

"You Don't Know," Ellie Greenwich (1965)

One of the great Brill Building songwriters* goes behind the microphone and sings a composition on which she also takes a co-writing credit. (The other co-writers were Jeff Barry, Greenwich's main songwriting partner, and George "Shadow" Morton, both of whom also produced.)

*Greenwich wrote or co-wrote songs including "Be My Baby," "Leader of the Pack" and "Do Wah Diddy Diddy."

Hey JMN2.

Are you ready yet to join the court of the late virtuoso Roy Buchanan with that Tele' axe of yours?

The Guitar will always be King.

What a terrific voice. And the first song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to become a top 10 U.K. hit.

A gig...Heikki Silvennoinen was quite big in the early 70's prog scene, Tabula Rasa, Dave Lindholm on the other hand is a legend.

Sorry I missed this. Tele is looking good with vintage bridge and saddles, I might be buying a 60's style worn strat with some Lollar pups. I have been practising, I started studying Berklee Jazz harmony theory book, I am too old to play too complicated but the theory behind it all interests me. I can play blues some and bluff with some jazzy ie adult chords...but the next step is to understand some of it.

Well, I guess it keeps my ailing brain busy.

Heavy strings + high action = rock'n'roll
"In jazz you never play the root" is so untrue

I believe this music chord theory and jazz harmony is like any other thing...I used to start a work in an office, learn the mechanics of the spreadsheets, what goes where, do that for a week or two...then you start seeing the big picture...connecting the dots....aahh...that's how you say go beating the prime broker to release some margin on the portfolio.

...I hope jazz harmony theory will be the same. All about the process.

edit. by the way, Hendrix's Hey Joe, he soloes solely on the pentatonic scale. Hendrix was very pentatonic. And that is how Buchanan starts this.

Oh yes, ZZ-Top, awesome! If you get a chance to see them live I'd suggest going, they remind me of Motorhead, they will 'selflessly' ensure you get far more than you paid for, they really lay it on for the fans, + the vibe is great. [x-ref Motorhead charging £25-Euro30, and playing for 3 hours, and being so bleedin' gracious to the audience].

Lucky you! I could walk there from my home, but won't be relo'ing back to the UK for a month, or I'd go. Last saw them 3(flippin)5 years ago at uni. Always liked them, they occupied a zone somewhere between the new romantics and the likes of Killing Joke... IMHO :)
Their early Peel Session is something of a benchmark by which I remember them:
