Here's the original version. It was written by Grace Slick when she was in The Great Society, before she moved to the Airplane. This version is live at the Matrix, with Slick playing the oboe. A very different, middle-eastern sound.

I've often wondered what Charles Lutwidge Dodgson would have made of it all. He would probably have enjoyed that version, as did I, thanks.

Since you liked that, you might also like "Sally Go Round the Roses", also recorded at The Matrix, by Grace Slick and the Great Society

I suspect he would have thought Lewis Carroll was partaking of dubious substances and was off his head ;)

"Surrender," Perpetual Langley (1966)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1vEb-raKUA

Belfast-born Mary Perpetual Langley was a sort of proto-Amy Winehouse, another nice white girl who could belt out songs with an amazingly soulful voice. (But minus the substance and behavioural issues.) She had good material to work with here, a song from the formidable team of Nick Ashford, Jo Armstead and Valerie Simpson.

The flip side of the single, "Two by Two," was pretty spiffing as well.

I love this song and here is a more recent version by the Icelandic singer Emiliana Torrini.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruIezHP_YvU

and this is a heavier version of hers used to great effect in the film Sucker Punch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpVKSGzgtog

for me this is one of the most powerful uses of a great song with some amazing visuals.

Ooh - nice idea for a bit of a side-track then - 'Great music set to great fight scenes'....

I'll pitch in with the Peaky Blinders gypsy fight with the Lee brothers, set to Blue Veins by The Raconteurs -

https://vimeo.com/101718007 - The action starts at around the 2-minute mark, although it's worth watching the whole clip to set the scene a little...

Peaky Blinders is always packed full of great music, mind.....

Came across this a few days ago, not heard of him but absolutely love it. Music really can unite the world ! :-)

John Dowland - Now o now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bYi7TY4bNE

Born: 2 January 1563, London Died: 20 February 1626, London Place of burial: St Ann, Blackfriars

Now, O now, I needs must part,
Parting though I absent mourn.
Absence can no joy impart:
Joy once fled cannot return.
While I live I needs must love,
Love lives not when Hope is gone.
Now at last Despair doth prove,
Love divided loveth none.

Sad despair doth drive me hence,
This despair unkindness sends.
If that parting be offence,
It is she which then offends.

Dear, when I am from thee gone,
Gone are all my joys at once.
I loved thee and thee alone,
In whose love I joyed once.
And although your sight I leave,
Sight wherein my joys do lie,
Till that death do sense bereave,
Never shall affection die.

Dear if I do not return
Love and I shall die together,
For my absence never mourn,
Whom you might have joyed ever.
Part we must, though now I die.
Die I do to part with you.
Him despair doth cause to lie,
Who both lived and died true.

"The Best Record Ever Made," Bill Lloyd (2012)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zubSe9OgNI

Some may remember American singer/songwriter/musician Bill Lloyd as half of Foster and Lloyd, the country music duo that's probably best known for the 1987 hit "Crazy Over You". F&L were perceived as mainstream at the time, but in retrospect I would prefer to think of them as representing an early stirring of alt-country. In any case, while Lloyd has continued to write songs for country artists including Trisha Yearwood, his heart is in power pop, and over the years Lloyd also has released a series of solo power pop recordings, of which Set to Pop (1994) is particularly well regarded by many aficionados of the genre, AIUI. This song is from Lloyd's 2012 release Boy King of Tokyo, and I really like the evocation of the role that records once played, in both the song and the great accompanying video.

Always been a bit of a fan of Steeleye Span . I saw them at The Dome Brighton in the late 70s. Unbelievably Maddy Prior is singing there again in December. I came across the CD version of "The Weaver & Factory Maid" but then found this live version from 2013 which I much prefer. it's suggested the rhythm replicates the beat of the loom and the closing harmonies are great.

Going back a bit...…

Well, all right, sixty years exactly. Thelonious Monk is still my top choice when I'm feeling a bit gloomy, and it's permanently on speed dial in my car. Were so many bum notes ever played with such exquisitely deliberate intent?

Thanks for that, IMHO one of the greatest rock songs ever written, and a fantastic song to experience when performed live.

I've mentioned on here previously that I've written extensively about Elvis Costello and reviewed many of his gigs for various publications over the years. After first releasing the song as a B Side to a Nick Lowe single back in 1978, Elvis then added it to the US version of his second and breakthrough album, Armed Forces. He also also made it a mainstay of his set list for concerts where it's remained for several decades. He had a pretty long period covering many tours when he'd always end with it, although 'Pump it Up' was often used as the band intro, and last song of the encore.

This video, from when Elvis subbed for David letterman on his eponymous evening show, shows both the quality of the song and the strength of performance Elvis gave it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ1ZQ99pKbY

I hope you enjoy the clip.

And as an occasional roadie for Brinsley Schwarz, a young Elvis Costello first met Nick Lowe, leading to collaboration ever since.

An odd choice given the audience, perhaps...

Tupac - 'The Way It Is'

based on the song by Bruce Hornsby and the Range (although a more different song it couldn't be).
