I've often wondered what Charles Lutwidge Dodgson would have made of it all. He would probably have enjoyed that version, as did I, thanks.

Belfast-born Mary Perpetual Langley was a sort of proto-Amy Winehouse, another nice white girl who could belt out songs with an amazingly soulful voice. (But minus the substance and behavioural issues.) She had good material to work with here, a song from the formidable team of Nick Ashford, Jo Armstead and Valerie Simpson.

The flip side of the single, "Two by Two," was pretty spiffing as well.

Some may remember American singer/songwriter/musician Bill Lloyd as half of Foster and Lloyd, the country music duo that's probably best known for the 1987 hit "Crazy Over You". F&L were perceived as mainstream at the time, but in retrospect I would prefer to think of them as representing an early stirring of alt-country. In any case, while Lloyd has continued to write songs for country artists including Trisha Yearwood, his heart is in power pop, and over the years Lloyd also has released a series of solo power pop recordings, of which Set to Pop (1994) is particularly well regarded by many aficionados of the genre, AIUI. This song is from Lloyd's 2012 release Boy King of Tokyo, and I really like the evocation of the role that records once played, in both the song and the great accompanying video.

Always been a bit of a fan of Steeleye Span . I saw them at The Dome Brighton in the late 70s. Unbelievably Maddy Prior is singing there again in December. I came across the CD version of "The Weaver & Factory Maid" but then found this live version from 2013 which I much prefer. it's suggested the rhythm replicates the beat of the loom and the closing harmonies are great.

Thanks for that, IMHO one of the greatest rock songs ever written, and a fantastic song to experience when performed live.

I've mentioned on here previously that I've written extensively about Elvis Costello and reviewed many of his gigs for various publications over the years. After first releasing the song as a B Side to a Nick Lowe single back in 1978, Elvis then added it to the US version of his second and breakthrough album, Armed Forces. He also also made it a mainstay of his set list for concerts where it's remained for several decades. He had a pretty long period covering many tours when he'd always end with it, although 'Pump it Up' was often used as the band intro, and last song of the encore.
