Greek elections

#235818

Postby SteMiS » July 11th, 2019, 10:42 am

Interesting results from the Greek elections over the weekend. Greece has become a bit of a poster boy for the anti EU conspiracy brigade, portrayed as a victim of EU (mainly German) bullying that drove the country into the arms of a ragbag of populists and right wing Eurosceptics.

The results were a heavy defeat for Syriza, which lost 59 of its 145 seats and a complete wipe out of the far right, anti immigrant, Golden Dawn, which lost all its 18 seats. In contrast the main stream Conservative, New Democracy Party, under the leadership of the pro EU Kyriakos Mitsotakis, won an absolute majority of the 300 seats, gaining 83 seats to take their total to 158.

Looks like Greece has learnt the lessons of its costly shift towards populism.
