AiY Passes Away

Asleep in Yorkshire was a curmudgeons' old git. He really was. He was a old grumpy fart. Indeed the entire village did not talk to him. He had no friends. None. When he walked down the street everyone crossed the road to avoid him.

Suddenly and without any warning he passed away.

This presented the local vicar with a huge problem.

He did not want to bury AiY at a service no one attended. It was his duty to ensure that AiY got the very best of send off's. So he put the word out. He let it be known that he was going to say something good about AiY at his graveside. And the locals picked up on this. What on earth, they thought, could the vicar say about AiY that would be good. The vicar had piqued their curiosity.

And the time came to bury the mortal remains of AiY. To send him on his spiritual journey. And the entire village, piqued by the promise of the vicars speech to say somehting good about AiY turned up. It was a sell out.

The service went well and the entire village followed AiY's coffin to his graveside.

The vicar looked up. "It's usual" he said, "to say something about those who are departing us today".

The crowd moved closer.

"I am charged", he said, "with saying something good about AiY before he leaves us"

The air was tense with anticipation. No one coughed or sneezed. It was deadly quiet.

"I can tell you all this much", said the vicar, "AiY was a very good whistler"
