STAY HOME

#299316

Postby staffordian » April 9th, 2020, 2:11 pm

Am I the only one irked by the government's parsimony?

They are spending zillions of pounds supporting people through this pandemic but can't apparently afford the ink needed to print the word AT?

Clearly you are not referring to the (undated) letter from 10 Downing Street that mentions 'stay at home' at least twice.

As does the accompanying leaflet from UK Government.

The government TV adverts omit "at" so clearly it saves airtime costs. :)

And the message on the podium ised for the daily government press briefing also omits it.

This irritated me too. It did get me thinking, though. While I would not say "stay home", I would say "go home", not "go to home".

You mentioned ink but I'm unsure in what way that is involved in a Television advertisement. :)

ised

Not a word with which I'm familiar.

With the font size they used, "AT' wouldn't have fitted.

Maybe going out to buy smaller letters was deemed an unnecessary journey.

Scott.

Was going to use the word used, but in the spirit of saving letters, thought I'd try to save a few pixels by using a smaller letter :D

Tommy Shelby uses the full "stay at home" if that helps. And he is on the BBC.

WARNING - swearing ;-) And if you have never watched Peaky Blinders it may not mean much to you!

I thought everyone here would be familiar with Life of Brian. (Ok, Christians may avoid it on principle.) I'm sure Brian would have received a grammar lesson,

I can almost quote the whole film verbatim. My reply was that of the centurion.

Having watched the clip (thanks :) ) - it's ironic that neither of you have actually quoted the lines correctly....

now write it out a 100 times :)

I'll think you'll find the not incorrect quotations were deliberate, thus UncleEben's 'might have written'.

Fair point. Althoughh gryff said "I can almost quote the whole film verbatim. My reply was that of the centurion."

Enjoyed the clip regardless

As Bwian might have written, so the centurion would have re-translated verbatim.

I studied Latin for a year in grammar school, and had a latin teacher exactly like that centurion. Maybe all latin teachers are like that?

It is sometimes said that emoticons help convey meaning in cases like this.

But in this case, in the absence of a "taking a role" emoticon or the chance of a harsh and interactive lesson, you should've told me to write it out C times.

(yeah, hindsight helps)

If you hover over the  emoticon, it says, "shocked". Maybe a smile, a wink or a laugh would have worked.
