Stupid hipster beer names.

#584979

Postby DiamondEcho » April 24th, 2023, 6:50 pm

Or should that be hipster stupid beer names?
In evidence I present, from a website I am browsing:
Infernal agreement
Blue screen of death
Kiss kiss bang bang
Futile purpose
The timeless way of building
That is correct

And so it goes on and on and... 'That is correct'; it's the presumed poignancy of it's utter vacuity. What happened to the gentle wit (Old Grumpy, Thumper, etc)? Are you meant to go to a bar and order a 'Kiss kiss bang bang' and has anyone tried it? :?

About 10x more breweries (more than that, since you seem to be including US beers), producing many more beers per year, in a world where lawyers jump on duplicate beer names for copyright infringement...

To get an idea of the problem, just try putting a single word-that-would-work-as-a-beer-name into somewhere like https://untappd.com and see if it's been used before.

And some of those names have more to them than first meets the eye - for instance The Timeless Way of Building is a 1979 book on the philosophy of architecture by Christopher Alexander.

There are quite a few duplicate (or more) beer names, and not just generic names (IPA, Best Bitter, London Porter, etc.) or ones named after hops (how many beers are called, "Mosaic"?)
One name already mentioned is "The Dog's B*****ks". Do you want the Empire one, or the Wychwood "Big, round & fruity" one? Or maybe the Balzac one...
Brain's or Greene King Fireside?
Brewers (certainly the smaller ones) are usually very friendly with each other so hopefully tolerate duplicate names otherwise beer names could get like racehorse names.

It varies - for one-off beers from small breweries the value of the entire gyle is worth less than the cost of an hour or two with a copyright lawyer. It's far easier in those cases just to go for a multiword name, where the entire due duligence consists of a quick search on Untappd.

But there certainly have been cases of beers being forced to rename. Usually the problems come when a big brewery wants to use a name that's already a core brand for a smaller brewery, if it's a core beer then it's worth fighting for unlike a one-off.

I tried the first part once. It worked!

To be fair, I do think that you might need a bit of warning about some of these beers, and the name often gives it.

Elvis Juice, for example contains grapefruit.

Doesn't always work though. Blue moon doesn't sound too out there, but is served with a slice of orange and seems to be made with orange juice.

You'd have to ask Grimm, it may be no more than they wanted to evoke a sense of "doing things the old way" for what is effectively an Orval clone, I don't know.

Not juice, orange peel - it's just a USian version of a traditional Belgian witbier, using a cleaner US yeast. Some of those traditional additives like coriander have much the same biochemistry as hops, they're stuffed full of compounds like terpenols.

Hey, I like Blue Moon on a summer evening! It's a wheat beer of (from memory) more Belgian than German style, nothing hipster about it.

Definition of hipster is to claim to have been in on something before anyone else

I tend to look at the description rather than the name

Really? I didn't know that. Guess I'd never make the grade as a Hipster! :)

Now, if you don't mind me taking the liberty: "Marksman88" - To me, that sounds like a perfect name for one of these crazy Hipster beers.

I agree sounds grrrreat except the 88 in my username is from my old house number. However, I was told in a heated debate that it is a far right conspiracy thing as "H" is the 8th letter so 88 becomes "HH" or "Hale Hatler" if you catch my drift. So I don't think an eponymous beer will be here in the foreseeable
