This is the proper Pippi. I've seen all the movies had some of the books.

The character Lisbeth Salander ("The Girl Who...)is based on Pippi Longstocking (imagined as a grown-up)

Boy, but she got messed up while growing from a child.
Have to say The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was one of the nastiest books I've ever read, as regards to its attitude to women.
But given that its Swedish title was something like Men Who Hate Women, it is not surprising.

Not the views of the author of course: Stieg Larsson was a socialist/feminist, active in Left politics (until he smoked himself to death at an early age...)
I've got the first book sitting in my reading pile at the moment.

The copy I was given had the first chapter of the 2nd book in the back.
I got about half way through and gave up. Most unpleasant.

I may demote it down the pile then...
I'm happy enough with my PD James etc, not a fan of brutal/explicit 'thrillers'

Ditto.
Though Rebus just about hits the spot for me.
Currently too much explicit violence (especially against women) being put about as entertainment.

Re: Brightly-coloured trainers
I think Ian Rankin and Val McDermid (sp?) had a spat about this - Rankin seeing V McD's work as too violent
I like Rankin's books (I have a few early Rebus First Editions!) but never sampled Ms McD's
