Last ball before lunch.
Grrr!
Radio Bristol cricket commentary described Lawrence's wicket as "the last ball before lunch". (Somerset v Essex)
IT WAS ONLY THE LAST BALL BEFORE LUNCH BECAUSE LAWRENCE WAS OUT! IF HE HADN'T BEEN OUT THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN TWO BALLS STILL TO BOWL _BEFORE_ LUNCH!!!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Re: Last ball before lunch.
Reminds me of that (supposedly) tricky quiz question:
"Captain Cook sailed round the world three times. On which one was he killed?"

You've missed the point.
It was the third last ball before lunch.
Because the wicket fell within two minutes of the scheduled, lunch break, lunch was taken early ie unscheduled.
Had he not have been out, was it the last ball before lunch? No. Because there would have been two more balls to come.
Its really very simple.

I don't think he has.
It really does depend on the precise wording used in the commentary. If they'd said "Lawrence took guard to face the last ball before lunch" then I'd agree with you. That is if they still take guard nowadays.

Re: Last ball before lunch.
Nope - it was the out on the alst ball before lunch quote.
It was only the last ball before lunch because he was out.
Its like saying the last batsman was out on the last ball of the match. It wasn't necessarily the last ball that could be bowled before the match would have otherwise ended. etc.
Its just the way my brain works obviously!

Yes, I do understand your point, as does Snorvey. In fact, I read something similar recently which was along the lines of your OP and caught my eye. Anyway, they really should say luncheon, what with it being cricket and all.
It's nearly the same as saying something lost , if found, will have been found in the last place one looks. It may also have been in the first place one looked but not then found.

Certainly not extinct but maybe the slices are a little dried out.
