Christmas

I went into a shop yesterday. They didn't have what I wanted, however, they did have Christmas decorations. It looked like they were just putting them out ready for the mad September rush :(

This was 29th August, nearly four months before Christmas day. Children haven't gone back to school yet from their summer holidays.

Why so early?

How many do they sell this early?

If the shelves are full of Christmas decorations, where are they going to put the Easter eggs in October?

Boycott the shop in question. If you have influence among its potential customers, persuade them to do likewise.

I'd love to organise a mass consumer campaign against excess humbuggery in shops. Something like, whatever supermarket is first to display humbuggery (and suitably verified) gets boycotted by a million shoppers with lots of publicity. Likewise department stores, coffee shops, other mass-market chains. Threat gets lifted on 1st December, after which they're allowed to indulge.

Debenhams in Glasgow were selling christmas stuff a few weeks ago. Seemed to be mainly reduced price stuff by the tills, probably left over from last year, but still total madness in my view.

Bit late this year. The first moan about Christmas coming too early was over a month earlier last year - viewtopic.php?f=29&t=6368&p=68810

Our local chain store is still selling Mother's Day cards at a 50% discount. Listen, fellas, if it's six months past Mother's Day and you haven't sent it yet, then no amount of bargain hunting is going to get you out of that hole you've just dug for yourself.

Christmas should be off-limits until at least Hallowe'en/Samhain , preferably until Bonfire Night

You're far too generous. Either the month of December or the ritual of Advent should be required to be with us before we can accept humbuggery.

Italy was kind-of a breath of fresh air in terms of celebrating christmas. They had lavish celebrations, but the duration was about three weeks, contrasting very favourably with three months in Blighty.

If I had my way it would start quietly last week of November (to allow the buying of Advent calendars..)

Last week my local pub had their Xmas menus available to look at!

I've heard of office Christmas parties happening in NOVEMBER due to difficulties booking etc
I'd rather not bother to be honest. How 'Christmassy' is that ? You end up with a load of people, some of whom you actively dislike, wearing silly hats and festive jumpers and having a 'party' on a drizzly Tuesday in late November. Then you have to go back to work for three weeks.

It's just wrong.

Snorvey, that really made me chuckle and for me at least rings very true ;) :D

John Lewis' Christmas advert (Elton was reputedly paid £5M for it) of Bohemian Rhapsody has been booming out of our TV for the last few days. Doesn't make me love Christmas any more, and it's at least as early as usual, but I DO LIKE IT!

Is that a Christmas advert?

I thought it was advertising for staff, given the tag line displayed at the end.

I think the Elton John Christmas advert is his 'Your Song', erm, song, so it seems as though quelquod has got two distinct John Lewis adverts mixed up.

Could well be as the Bohemian Rhapsody one is kids, mainly, and I actually found it funny.

I'm confused now. Ellie Goulding sang "Your Song" in the 2010 JL Xmas ad. Is there something else?

You're correct, but this is a new advert with the same song and Elton himself -

"the advert will chart the course of Elton's life" - ah, the true meaning of Christmas then...

Oh well, shouldn't pay so much attention to OH's commentary over the top of my Kindle.
Never mind - I still like it (the ad, not Christmas).
