Not sure if this is a 'whoosh' moment, but are you meaning, 'call me Dave?'

Alexei Sayle had his own version of this many years ago. "Alexei Sayle - Sharing Celebrity Names Equally" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_8j68WyxOU

(He was disappointed when the returning officer on by-election night 1981 was given special dispensation to abbreviate his name in reading out the results).
Is that the same by-election won for the Conservatives by Mao Tse Tung (as was) with ~650 million votes? If I remember correctly, Tarquin Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F'tang-F'tang-Olé-Biscuitbarrel was the losing Labour candidate.

Could be getting my by-elections confused?

Possibly. It was the by-election won by Shirley Williams.
I was kind-of aware of it 'cos I knew Tarquin at the time (I never joined CURLS, but once or twice described my membership number as the empty set). Interesting nugget: though he of course lost his deposit, overall he made a profit on the exercise, through appearance fees on shows like Wogan.

Well done[1]. You've identified the right curl that CURLS used (in plural, naturally) as its logo.
[1] Unless of course you were ever a curls-insider or near-insider. Don't tell me you're me?

Re: Just call me
...Let's try and sort this out. I think this helps a bit:
Election Night Special
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Election_Night_Special
1981 Crosby by-election
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1981_Crosby_by-election
I was thinking of a radio(?) comedy sketch where: Somebody with a long and very, VERY posh name - 'LABOUR!', lost to "Mao Tse Tung" - 'CONSERVATIVE!' - "650 million votes"
Possibly an old recording of 'I'm Sorry I'll Read that Again' on (reel?) tape? I can't now find a reference in the Wikipedia page to such a sketch so, short of spending hours with an old tape recorder I think I'll just have to let it go.
