Arrrrgh...why do some people insist on winding electrical leads up so that they become horribly twisted and impossible to straighten out! Hairdryer leads are the worst but computer leads also suffer.

Obviously to keep them tidy but I understand your point. My bugbear is the vacuum cleaner cord. I have a very long cord and in the current cold weather it is very difficult to get it straightened out. I am afraid I have no need for an electric hairdryer.

I often spend time untwisting phone handset cables. The hardest is when I need to pack away my PA system and have inexperienced helpers.

you loop up a cable then take the last bit and wrap it round the rest of the cable a few times. Roadie 101 right? Or have I been lead astray?

I bought some really nice velcro cable ties about 2 years ago which do a really good job and can be attached to the end of a cable.

Vacuum cleaner leads, definitely. Closely followed by the four miles of cabling behind my wife's computer desk, which unplugs itself silently at dead of night and takes itself off to a nautical knot-tying event. Every few months, I heave a deep sigh and untangle it all. It takes hours to restore order, and it lasts a couple of weeks at most.

And another thing. Why do those multi-plug tower socket thingies (www.argos.co.uk/product/5436284) have only ten or twelve outlet sockets on them? Any of the females in my family will tell you that you need at least twenty, or preferably thirty. Those hair driers won't run on air, you know?

It's when the users of these hair-related appliances (including salon workers who must experience it multiple times a day) think they can untwist/untangle them merely by pulling them straight.

Then wonder how they're tangled/twisted again a short time later.

They're great I think I first saw a Velcro tie on an expensive, guaranteed for life, guitar cable a couple of decades ago. I still use insulating tape to bundle cables sometimes but it can leave a sticky residue if left on for prolonged periods so I've mostly switched over to the Velcro ones affixed permanently to the cables, if anyone is interested these are the sort I like.
I second your comment about keen but unskilled coilers. I tend to tell people who want to help that I have method and I like to do things myself but feel free to carry stuff to the van.

I have the re-usable cable ties.

All I know is -
never pull cable off a drum sideways, as it leaves a twist in it - always unwind forward

I have a supply of "assorted cables not currently in use". If I want a cable, I know it'll be .. erm .. fun to identify and extract something suitable.

On a day-to-day basis, the earphones I use with my phone can get quite entangled in my pocket, and any attempt to coil them away neatly just makes things worse. But some leads tend to self-untangle a lot better than others.

I always had a problem with vacuum cleaner cables until OH replaced them with soft rubber cables. They're great and don't seem to tangle or kink at all. Sorry to be happy about this.

Do you believe in ghosties, ghoulies and gremlins. I didn't used to, but I am now convinced of the existence of gremlins. These are nasty little creatures who come out at night, after I've gone to bed, and tangle up all my beautifully coiled wires and tie knots in them. I have no other explanation as to how wires get tied in knots.

Actually the cables are highly sexual creatures and when left alone they have cable orgies and inter-mate with each other frantically and furiously and they've fallen into post coital sleep still intertwined.

You might just be right there, you know. It would certainly explain the compatibility troubles I've been having with my old Acer monitor recently.

In retrospect, the explanation's been hiding in plain sight all along. The computer might think it's got a VGA ("Very Good @rse"), but the monitor is thinking HDMI ("Hardly Deserves My Interest").

And don't even get me started on AC/DC........
