Dreading a call from an overseas relative....
...asking what is going on with the British political process.
These enquiries having been getting steadily more incredulous since Brexit.
My embarrassment is such that I am starting to avoid the calls

Could it be that people who elect to permanently leave the UK for whatever reason are possibly predisposed to see the UK in an unfavourable light anyway?
Of course we have even amongst our enlightened membership here at least one pro-Remain Lemon who loved the EU so much that he moved to the continent that is the furthest away from the EU, and well before Brexit. So there is that.

I don't see any mention of people who have left the UK.

Did you miss the "overseas relative" part?
OK, they could have been born overseas or be a relative through marriage. But chances are that if you have overseas relatives then they either made a conscious decision to leave the UK or else made a conscious decision to not return here having that right.
Personally I would take their call and tell them it is none of them damn business what the UK voters want.

Not necessarily. But I am assuming that this alleged "overseas relative" has some connection to the UK and probably a right to reside here, which they elect to not take up.
Perhaps the OP can clarify for us?

I am a UK national. The relative I am talking of is a French cousin in law. His questions are friendly, not pointed. He is an English teacher in France, keen on all things British, and trying to make sense of what is going on here. His questions always assume there is some sense behind what the UK is up to, but that he doesn't understand it. This is what makes trying to explain some of the mess so painful. There is a limit to the number of times you can say "Because they are idiots"

Well if your answer to such enquiries is such it's hardly difficult to wonder why he keeps repeating the question. Your answer provides nothing of substance by way of explanation.

I expect that's precisely why he finds it frustrating. The foreign relative is under the misapprehension that there must be something of substance by way of explanation.

Indeed. Why is there a limit?

Indeed, I find French politics to be inexplicable. Many people do not understand American politics. Everyone disapproves of Russian politics.
It is surely natural to be baffled by other cultures, and typically their politics follows from their culture and their values.

Exactly so!
One might as easily reply by saying: "So then, a perfect match for current government policies"

I've got an Australian cousin.
She was born in Australia.
Her parents were there on UK official business when she was born.
