I expect many muslims do exchange christmas presents (more fool them).

But Christian culture? Yeah, by blatant appropriation. Date of a roman festival. Presents loosely appropriated from the story of a St Nicholas's trade in young teenage girls. And a romantic story that originally arose in a peace process, bringing a terrorist movement into mainstream society while softening it and turning its core story into something much more benign.

Just get over it. Christmas has been all about commercialism since the fourth century.

Who hasn't 'appropriated' Christmas?

I'm not in the least bit religious, and I know I have.....

If we're going to start singling people out for doing so, it's going to be a loooooong list.....

Put me somewhere near the top of it.

The story still circulates about how a Japanese department store once laid on an extravagant themed event for Christmas, featuring Father Christmas nailed to a cross on the roof. Bit of a pity that Snopes says it's a myth. There are some stories that damn well ought to be true.

There are quite a few Asian countries that regularly declare general public holidays for every religious holiday they can find - Christian, Muslim, maybe Hindu, and sometimes all the full moon poyas, of which there are generally 13. Egypt always observes Coptic Christmas and Coptic Easter, which is impressive since the Copts represent only about 5% of the population.

I've managed to miss the advert so far, but are you sure they're Muslim? Headscarves, etc? But even if so, maybe we shouldn't blame Tesco. I gather that Christmas shopping is a big deal in Iran, for example. (https://theotheriran.com/2015/01/01/pho ... ng-part-2/ . Headscarves and all.) And the M&S store at Marble Arch is still doing a surprisingly good Middle East trade, considering its Jewish roots.

Toughest Christmas assignment for me was remembering exactly what to say to my parents' Christadelphian neighbours. Very nice people, they were, and yes, you're right, there was a Christ in the name there, but he was really just an ordinary bloke who acted as a front man for the heavyweight Old Testament god, and every day of your life ought to be like Christmas anyway, so move on folks, there's nothing to see.

Wouldn't stop them dispensing the mince pies and seasonal bonhomie, even though you didn't get a card for your mantelpiece. One of the many reasons why I liked them.

No point trolling and aggravating if the replies are well thought-out and sensible. I haven't seen this advert but apparently many mostly christians got their knickers in a twist.

I reckon some "mostly Christians" I know are convinced that Jesus would have bought his Christmas dinner at McDonalds with a free plastic reindeer, if he'd had half a chance. Followed by a few lagers in the afternoon, and perhaps a game of Call of Duty: The Palestine Uprising.

Am I getting too serious? Or unnecessarily flippant?

Hmmm, I'd guess that pork is one thing you wouldn't have found in a Jewish stable. ;)

All this talk of cultural appropriation and Christmas seems a little ironic.

Didn't this start as a pagan celebration of the winter solstice/ Then the church moved Jesus' birthday to it, subsequently changed the calendar to shift off a few days, and hey presto, it's now a Christian celebration!

Similar thing happened with the 'sacrament' of marriage. Of course, before the church, no two people ever shacked up together.

Inspired me to do shortcrust pastry, then some bockwurst wrapped inside, with sriracha or mustard or plain - homemade sausage rolls. Cheers Greggs!

Not quite the same thing though is it? As far as I'm aware, the eating of sushi, while originating from Japan, has no particular religious significance.

With all due respect,

It's like George Benson's nose, used to be an honest black man's proper nose, nothing to be a shamed of, but his nose keeps getting thinner and thinner, cultural appropriation in reverse, George is probably a victim of racism. They all are.
