Many European countries have fireworks parties on New Years Eve so I expect those now working in the UK are following that tradition.

The extremely-loud flash-bangers available in much of Europe are banned from sale in the UK under our separate legislation despite their CE markings.

I don't think that we have a Vietnamese community here, though I may be wrong.

But another lot seems to be going off from a different direction every half an hour or so.

Pity anybody with pets.

That is a possibility, though there have not been any mortar type bangs yet, though I do expect some at midnight as some of the sailing fraternity are known for "nipping over" to buy them. Amongst other things.

Our kids have grown a bit, and are now all equipped with smartphones.
The tactic of yesteryear - turn the clocks forward, celebrate early, and get them all in bed by 9.30 - no longer works.
Now I just ask them not to make too much noise and grump off to bed before midnight
