I read this, and was outraged by the behaviour of the Dutch East Indies Company in creating and defend their monopoly.
For a similar story on companies using their power against the public good here is a youtube video on why light bulbs were made shorter lasting to preserve company profits. It then goes on from there to decry planned obsolescence in all things.
