Re: Alzheimer’s fakery?
...Interesting. I liked these two comments:
But he says he felt an urgent need to go public about work that might mislead the field and slow the race to save lives. “You can cheat to get a paper. You can cheat to get a degree. You can cheat to get a grant. You can’t cheat to cure a disease,” he says. “Biology doesn’t care.”
Selkoe’s bigger worry, he says, is that the Lesné episode might further undercut public trust in science during a time of increasing skepticism and attacks. But scientists must show they can find and correct rare cases of apparent misconduct, he says. “We need to declare these examples and warn the world.”

Re: Alzheimer’s fakery?
The Alzheimers Society isn't so sure that this setback is serious. The authors of the following report don't seem to doubt that there was fraud in the presentation of Lesné’s theory about the "new" amyloid protein aβ*56; but they maintain that aβ*56 is only one of many such proteins, and that many or most of the other amyloids have a much stronger connection with conditions such as Alzheimers.
The Society also says that, although the original discovery about (all) amyloids was significant, it's not just the amyloids that cause the disease. Rather, it's down to a complex interaction of the amyloids with other physical issues, such as weight, blood vessel health and activity. But heck, I suppose we knew all of that.

Dr Richard Oakley, Associate Director of Research at Alzheimer’s Society, said:
'There are many types of amyloid we know contribute to brain cell death in dementia. This investigation only looked at a specific type of amyloid - aβ*56 - so if what’s suggested here ends up being true we definitely would not need to throw the baby out with the bath water.
The case continues.
