Wordle curiosity

#573025

Postby NomoneyNohoney » March 5th, 2023, 10:01 am

There isn't a 'Weird Corner' so I guess I'll have to post this story here.

I usually play Wordle on my phone, accessing the New York Times' website for the daily game.
I have an old phone, that has the date set one day ahead, for - reasons!
Yesterday my regular phone was out of reach, so I used the old phone to do the puzzle. The answer I got was different to the one I got on my regular phone, so I checked this morning, and my old phone result yesterday was today's word. I assume the NYT website checks your phone's date and then serves up the corresponding puzzle. Then, this morning I tried on the old phone (with tomorrow's date), and the answer is again different.

This has the potential for a bit of fun.
If you test in similar way and find I'm right, you could:-
a) take perhaps six attempts on 'old' phone to get tomorrow's answer, then tomorrow on regular phone, solve it in one go. Show that off proudly.
b) tell people you're psychic, and give them clues to tomorrow's word. I told this story to a friend, and said today's word would be clued by "Britney Spears." Sure enough, my clue was bang on, as I'd deduced I was seeing tomorrow's word today (or yesterday, if you see what I mean.)
Anyway, just a home-grown curiosity to share with you. What amuses me may not amuse you - ymmv!

I've just done today's Wordle before reading this thread - so didn't see the clue.

Chuffed with myself to get it in three goes though!

That's the fun of Wordle - I do enjoy it - but I'm always suspicious of double letters being used, and 'Americanisms.' Congrats on three though...

One change I made after a while: instead of trying to use the 'best' starting word, I decide on a different starting word each day on the spur of the moment. Any 5 letter word is up for consideration but it'll likely have two vowels and all five letters will be different.

And at the back of my mind will be that the word of the day will favo(u)r the American spelling and that the game's author works in IT. Which paid off on the day the word was 'gamer'.

I was just squinting at my phone, and thought, "but garner has got six letters." Then I looked more carefully.

Sorry to spoil the fun, but today's word, and the next few, is stored in plane text in the HTML of the page. Cheating is easy!

I have now moved on to sedecordle.
This is like wordle, but you have to solve 16 words simultaneously in 20 goes

I gave up on wordle and all its variants some time ago. I now do squareword which makes me think most days.

That sounds scary!

I do clickword.org now but I'm baffled at some of the words it does or doesn't recognise!

The ones I do most days are:
Wordle
Quordle
Octordle (the 'rescue' version is a nice twist)
Squareword
Wordall
Waffle

of those, Wordall is probably my favourite as it can (should) be solved without any guesswork. Waffle is a good challenge and hard to get the full 5 stars.
